What complicates things enormously is that as noted it applies to each individual area of competence and there's a separate curve for each, but we tend to measure ourselves up against other people as individuals not as the sum of a bunch of different competency curves. A transmission line simulator will allow you to explore a few different internal volume shapes, like a rear taper, which can remove resonances effecting a wide bandwidth midbass. Most TL simulators will also allow you to model different absorption material density and location. Someone on diyAudio has a backup of the Leonard Audio software which you can download.

I quite like folded horn speakers. I usually use them with a tweeter box on top.
