Hi all,
I built a pair of DIY open baffle speakers using a Pluvia 7HD full range driver together with 2 Peerless 12 inch drivers for lf. I would like to keep things as simple as possible, and I don't like the need for a seperate DSP and two power amplifiers.
So I was wondering, if there exists a well performing single driver Pluvia 7HD design? I'm aware of some free plans on the Mark Audio website. But how about lf-range for such a small driver? I don't need very low lf range, but I guess it should at least reach about 60-80 Hz (-3dB) to have some acceptable lf? Any suggestions about which design would be suitable? Or should I get a bigger driver?

The 'HalfTower' is what sprang to my mind immediately. I have the MicroTower arrangement with two P7HDs per cabinet and they have room-filling bass.
If you want 60Hz-80Hz (-3dB), Pensil or Frugel-Horn are good choices.
I mainly use TQWT, but 60-80 Hz (-3dB) is not so good.

Microtowers rock. 🙂I have the MicroTower arrangement with two P7HDs per cabinet and they have room-filling bass.

There are so many designs to choose from. What size were you thinking about for the P7HD driver’s?
Yep, I loved my microTowers for many years, first with EL70 then much more with P7.2HD. No bass support needed.
Sadly, I had to remove the drivers and throw the boxes in a dumpster about six months ago when my wife and I relocated to Japan. I did bring the two pair of drivers with me, and now I am partway through a Maeshowe build for 2 of Pluvias and really excited to hear my first BLH. I have no doubt the bass will be satisfying.
I might build Cornu spiral horns with the other pair and use them in the kitchen or dining room.
Lots of great options!!!

Would deeply appreciate a succinct summary of the microTower auditory effect or a pointer to specific information -- the massive thread here is unfortunately too long to wade through.
(Half-seriously) I think there might be a weird mental interferometry that turned widely-spaced timing/phase differences into perceived extra detail. Really?
My stacked micor55 became "FR-perfect" LX after I had unintensionally/unsuspectingly heard them firing up+front but not even contiguous. Hence the previous paragraph.

Two stacked fullrange 5" (really 4.5) run XO-less in series: upper 4ohm Michael Audio "drum paper" in 6L labyrinth (slot-loaded); lower 8ohm Correct P-610 variant in 17L up-firing tower (was subwoofer) with bottom port. BR/BR cabs punchier; folded (using divider boards) tapered-TL/ML-TQWT cabs more perfect. I don't know what "transcient-perfect" means exactly, but to my ears this LX-like pairing deserves that adjective. Speed and clarity of ESL; linear dynamic articulation of Axiom80 (alas from memory); an order more musical detail than beryllium headphones; natural realism. Reproduces...
@wchang The easiest way for me to characterize the microTowers (in the “Castle” configuration) is to say they bring the band into the room. Some speakers can transport you into the studio with the musicians, with pinpoint precision, imaging and soundstage (as long as you get your head right in the sweet spot). The microTowers put the band in your room, for better or worse, and sound good from pretty much anywhere in the room - better yet in their generous sweet spot. I may build another pair some day, but it’s time for me to explore other options. Been lusting after Silbury for about a decade, but I’ve got P7HD waiting in boxes so Maeshowe will have to scratch the itch for now.

Hi, thanks for your suggestions! Size doesn't matter so much, just wondering: is the low frequency range of the Pensil and Frugel-Horn design sufficient / acceptable?
By all accounts, yes.the low frequency range of the Pensil and Frugel-Horn design sufficient / acceptable?
The caveat, of course, is that you should not expect any of these designs to be satisfying at ear-damaging SPL.
Hi, thanks again for your responses! The Frugel Horn MK3 looks interesting. If I'm correct, it's a combination of a transissionline and horn. Is there any explanation online about how this exactly works? And if I'm correct, my Pluvia 7HD speakers are compatible with this design?
It is mostly a horn, but like all sall horns it i a TL at the lowestfrequencies, but where bthe transition happens depends a lot on room placement. If one takes maximum advantage of the room to extend the horn mouth it becomes a horn over itsb entire bandwidth.

Exactly. If you require some extra SPLs, or have a large room, then build something bigger that will move some air. Otherwise, bandwidth isn't an issue. The caveat, of course, is that you should not expect any of these designs to be satisfying at ear-damaging SPL.

Forgive me for hijacking the thread for a quick question. How does the chp 90 compare with the 7hd? I'm thinking that's my next driver project. I'd quite like to try a bookshelf tl PMC style if there is a design out there.

I would like to use the speaker in a 6x10 meters room, which is large. I would like to make a small corner where I put my audio setup - the rest of the room is my woodworking workshop. I usually listen on moderate spl levels - I don't like loud. Would these Frugel Horn MK3 still be ok for such a room? I won't sit too far away from the speakers.
