The making of: The Two Towers (a 25 driver Full Range line array)

About 26 years ago I fixed the power steering rack on my old Ford station wagon. That was the last time I got greasy finger nails and skinned knuckles. I told myself I will pay mechanics to do car work from then on. However, I did plug a tire leak myself a month ago. Pulling a wheel off a car is hard work! We do get old and stuff that takes muscle is best left to people with muscle and skill to fix. 🙂

TT’s are cool cars. Although air cooled 911’s are all the rage now with the guys restoring them and selling them for like 250 big ones (Singer for example).

Sorry for the off topic. I have a thread to discuss cars over in my forum if anyone wants to talk cars more.

Singers are way way above 250K

As the season for my 'Vandermill Audi' tuning is coming to an end due to fall kicking in over here, and I'm quite pleased with the results...

I do find myself indoors a lot more often and am starting to tune my Vandermill Audio project again 😉.
Having a bit of fun with balancing everything, which is a lot to be frank. Trying to find the most convincing mix between ambience and mains to make me forget I'm in a real room.
It's not that easy as everything you do really does influence everything. Meaning, dialing up any ambience sound level is bound to upset overal balance as well.
So it will take me a while but it is really worth it. I do have the room to myself far more often, which re-ignited the interest this Audio hobby again. (I haven't actually been away, but I'm reading on the forums instead of posting and experimenting. For quite a while my speakers were much more often the domain of my son instead of me. He enjoys them immensely which I consider a great compliment to my work. Meanwhile I was far too busy with learning to do paint correction and whatnot...

I'm hoping to get back at it a little, as I've never really tried to dial it in in the same way I had done with the full range TC9 arrays. I got side tracked (which happens more often) but also life gets in the way of our hobby at times.

The speakers have been in regular use though, we use regularly them for movies (still very pleased about that aspect) and even when watching Formula 1. If I have to guess, the movie setup was better balanced than music, simply by running a few 5.1 checks. I wish it were that simple to dial in the 2 channel music (with ambience backdrop).

It's getting there though. I'm still following the voltage vs current drive topics with interest but I don't think there's much to gain for me there, as the arrays don't do any heavy lifting anymore. So the cones hardly move at all and are quite well behaved from the start.

Anyway, I hope to write more soon!

I've got to make an honorable mention for the song: "Stockholm" from "OSI". If you have a good extension in the bottom end it's going to come in handy.
The stage is beautifully mixed and feels/sounds wide and deep. In other words: fun to listen to, it helps that I can appreciate the song too.
The keyboard line hits very close to home, making me think instantly about the lyrics: "Close the door, put out the light. You know they won't be home tonight." from my all time favorite band.
Here's a link to the song on Youtube. It deserves better media though. I got this as a tip from my son who is hard at work to expand his library.

The deep and wide stage rivals what other great mixes accomplish. Though the winner for me still is "Malia & Boris Blank" with a song like "Celestial Echo".

It may not hit as deep as "Stockholm", but the stage is all enveloping and beautifully done and a joy to listen to for me.

Just wanted to throw that out here...

I've been listening to the new Tears for Fears album.
I have a buddy who went to see the show and he said it was one of the best show he'd ever seen. And he's seen hundreds of shows.
Their live album section is very tight, musically superb.
A completely different style, but quite uplifting.

I did it, l freaking did it!

Finally read all 408 pages of this thread!

Technically l started 4 years ago, but only read some pages and jumped around, too excited to start building. This year l deleted social media from my mobile and rediscovered this thread.

I built my first pair of line array 3 years ago and my findings were similar on the absorbing first reflections front. Where l am going to take a slightly different tack is Im adding ambiance back with a home theater receiver and… four more line array! I’ll be comparing Dolby Surround Upmixer, Auromatic and Logic7.

Thank you so much @wesayso and, time to start my own thread 🙂

I have high hopes for the Logic 7, From what I've read it is superior in upmixing music. With (for me) a legend like David Griesinger behind it should be able to deliver!
Awesome project, should be a fun journey all the way! You should have the much needed dedication for this as you've shown as much by reading my entire thread 😀.

And I thought wiring my two line arrays was an exercise in patience....
Wiring 6? I can't imagine!
