Markaudio Alpair 10.3

Hi zman01,

I have now a smaller TQWT cabinet with the 10.2 drivers and they sound already fantastic.
the cabinet walls are too thin 18mm MDF, which means you can sometimes hear the cabinet.
Unfortunate it’s not possible to change drivers. the builder has cemented them in.
the advantage of the Sibelius cabinet is that it is super robust and designed by a very good musician by ear. When I saw the construction project of Hondasnl I was sold!
when the cabinet is ready I will also select the most suitable Alpair 10 driver by measurements and hearing. I am curious and actually can't wait ;-)
Unfortunately production of the Alpair 10 has stopped (for everyone except Harley) and I expect the diy Sibelius will become extinct.

Unfortunately, it is.
But we have many other drivers that can replace Alpair10.3. Maybe in another box.

I have a pair of 10.3 in my Silbury and I like them alot. What a pity their production stopped.

I don't know how they compare in an apple2apple situation to the 11MS that I have in my FHXL, but on those different speakers the 10.3 have more definition on highs and lows, while 11MS are softer on top and seem to have more but less extended lows.

Which speakers will be possible to install on the Silbury if the 10.3 will have issues?

I am on email, you know? 😉

IIRC I've covered this before elsewhere, but present spec. drivers for Silbury are:
  • Alpair 10.3 / 10P (assuming you can find any)
  • MAOP 10 (a few still about IIRC -note date of post)
  • CHR-90
  • CHP-90
  • Alpair 9G (forthcoming, but don't hold your breath at present)
  • CHN-110*
  • Pluvia 11
  • MAOP 11.2
  • Alpair 11MS
Each will need handling slightly differently with the damping -but that's expected anyway in the design; Silbury is by intent a high-gain horn when boundary loaded, since it's much easier to damp out what you don't need than increase what doesn't exist in the first place. Give me a 'healthy excess' any day. :devilr:

*slightly borderline, but it works 'well enough' that I struggle to justify a dedicated enclosure for the Megalith range -especially as it's a 'value' unit.

Does anyone know where the (A) stands for?

Please run in the latest Markaudio drivers:

1 - First 100 hours - low volume music only. The music should be general/vocals with modest bass. Please don't use any artificial and/or single tone signal signals this risks creating a memory patten in the outer 7 to 10 micron cone substrate. You can run the drivers in free air or near free air, but pay attention to the physical movement, the driver's power-train should not move more than 1mm.

2 - From 100 hours to 300 hours, gradually increase the load to normal listening levels. Typically and depending on room size, the volumes should be around low 80's dB near constant loads with peak loads not exceeding 86dB. For those without any SPL measuring equipment, set your system to moderate listening levels. You should be able to hold a conversation without raising your voice while the drivers are being run.

3 - From 300 hours out, the driver's power-train will enter its optimal load phase on its suspensions. Markaudio driver suspensions are critical components as they have to cope with long-throw demands of the cone/coil. I recommend some care from 300 to 500 hours as fully optimised suspensions will give you many years of reliable service life. Bass loads are available but go a little easy on the volume until passed 500 hours.

Remember fellas, Markaudio drivers are "long throw" light load units. They will give you allot of wide usable band width but they aren't designed for near constant maxed volume "rock un roll". The latest models have built-in arrestors to help avoid damage from accidental over-load, so this helps but its not a replacement for commence sense operation of these types of drivers, be they Markaudio or other full-rangers.
