Fun in a theatre - 3x Faital 18XL1800

Alright guy, pick your poison...efficiency or low tune.

Grey @ 700wrms = TH.
Black @ 500wrms = TQWP or TQWT (tapped quarter wave pipe or tube = straight flare TH = ease of build, no angles).
Both enclosures are <800L.
If you check out some of the original TH threads on diyaudio, designers spoke about running their TH's without low pass filters and still sounding good.
Me personally, I would choose the TH due to the efficiency and overall frequency response above 15hz.

Many thanks! I guess room gain/corner loading will help a bit too?

Now I indeed have to choose and see how I can build this so the woofer can be accessed in the cramped space in the left corner. And also check if the vent holes don't make too much noise with high excursion.

Yes I understand but I mean the voice coil vents in the woofer motor. They do blow with higher excursions but it'll probably be inaudible compared to the SPL of the horn itself?

And how does automated room calibration software (Audyssey & Dirac) handle these types of alignments with the dip at 50-60Hz? My original plan to go sealed was to get a linear as possible frequency response to allow the upcoming Dirac ART to work as smooth as possible 😉

wow that is insane output. Fascinating !
I too wonder how to handle the dips.

In the TQWT is it essentially limited to 40 Hz ?
In the TH, it seems like you could equalize to a flat 120dB to 100Hz and then roll it off ?

What are the excursions at the low limits - 10Hz?
Can you EQ your way out of a dip at 55Hz like the TH has? Or boost the output at 10Hz?

Sorry for so many questions, this randomly came across my recommended posts and I'm fascinated 😀

I stay with my closed cabinet design for the Faital 18XL1800, I will have seven of them in the room, controlled by 2.5K amp's at 8 Ohms and managed by a Trinnov Altitude processor using their new technology " Wave forming" Also look to the brand Ascendo, they all use closed sub's for their cinema's Sub's ranging from 12" to 80" Kibk: https://www.aia-cinema.com/products/subwoofers.html

With the TH, the driver is reverse mounted.

With the TQWP, the driver is normal mounted. However, the enclosure depth is 9.25in. The driver mounting depth is 9.17in. You can double the mounting plate to gain 0.75in.

Bet you don't hear that dip. You'll probably get lucky and your room nodes fill in the dip.

You could limit the TQWT to 40hz or use a higher low pass filter and some EQ . The goal was response to 10hz.

Sealed enclosures cannot compete with the low distortion and efficiency of a BP enclosure.
If a driver moves, then it distorts.
Per a given voltage, a driver moves less in a BP enclosure than a sealed enclosure.
You use less power to get the same output (dB)...above BP6 tuning.
Plus, you get driver mechanical noise with sealed enclosures.
The driver being buried in BP enclosures kills those mechanical noises. The folds do too.
