DAC AD1862: Almost THT, I2S input, NOS, R-2R

That UK AudioNote picked the AD1865 cause they had problems to source easily the ad1862 they start first to tube. I would believe more Kondo than AudioNote UK...not the sames.
I have read that.
In other words, the Audio Note (UK) DAC1.1x has no oversampling, no jitter reduction, no noise shaping and no re-clocking. Having removed all of the digital filtering that is required for oversampling, all filtering is done in the analogue domain where it is easier to retain good, wide band phase-frequency and dynamically coherent behaviour. It uses the highest grade Analogue Devices AD1865, 18Bit stereo converter chip solely because we found it to be the best sounding available (yes, even better than the 20Bit versions!).

I agree on tye tda1541As pedigree vs the sound of it. The fact they also react not tge same to the sim mode as well I have found. I have also a taiwann 98 , a S1 but no S2.Tyere were also S2 taiwann stamped.
Hi. Yes, it's a nice thing, really sounding best after it's been on for an hour or so. I've had access to a Marantz CD7 (two S2 chips in it as standard) and though very well made, I thought it uninspiring for sound and not as good as a slightly upgraded Cambridge Audio CD3. As you and others know, the supporting system makes so much difference, it's best in my view to try to balance the improvements throughout the setup.
 
Did Mr Qvortrup deem jitter-thwarting measures musically evil, or just unworthy of his digital brilliance?
I really wouldn't know, I just copied the text from their site. The bottom line was that they used the AD1865 because they thought it sounded best, not because they couldn't get the AD1862.

Of course I don't agree with them, AD1862 sounds better to me. I like the slightly more aggressive sound that chip puts out. In terms of sound, it is positioned somewhere between the melodious AD1865/PCM1702 and the more aggressive PCM63.
 
Well maybe what is on a vendor site is written for marketing ? As well a single chip is easier often than two mono (while with the tda1541A it is a pain...but the great advantage to use a star ground with it for some reasons. The biggest pain with the tda1541a is how is distributed the two gnd pins vis a vis of the output pins and also the DEM return paths as well. While with the well distributed pins if the ad1862 you have 2 chips,... two star grounds is impossible, you ask yourself while designing the pcb on how to reduce the loop of the gnds between both while the high polluting digiral line are close and cross the power lines. 3 or 4 layers help a little for tyat last people to avoid crossing currents. But to make a 3D design with piggy back stacked two ic, you ever will have a current loop between the two ic around where the gnd pins of both. How much it arms ...i really have no idea.
I made a 4 layers mistly because I wanted two close ic for i/v and line driver tasks because if the opa I chose, so I profited to enhance rhe front end side roo thanks to the help of more layers. But the two layers I shared has the two opa simplified ground with the front end of the miro jlsounds design everyone knows it is good. I just like to experiment...
As for Audio Note I read the UK one is not the Japaneese one (some activities were sold) but I do not know. My understanding is the UK's makes a living on rhe Japaneese reputation one, and source some parts they make more local, but I do not know for sure. Off topic....
 
Have you got a pic of your tube stage here, did you want a better IV before the tubes?
As one of the cople people who have played around with the Miro's DAC I recommend you try tube output. We tried c3g, 6sn7, 6n6p and with adapter 7n7 and ecc88 with transformer and capacitor as output. This is also the order in our opinion. So C3g+OPT, 6sn7+OPT ...
So put any tube drive of an amplifier with capacitors as outout and it will be more beautiful than the OP AMO outout.

I really don't think a reputable manufacturer and designer name would say it just because of the marketing. It is going a bit too far. As for designing, if it sounds better, who gives a damn about a little bit more trouble, they had a spot to fill with a quality product for high end niche. It most definitely boiled down to what the designer found to sound the best for his/their ears and for the market they planned to release it to. Not a cheap device 😉

Too complicated! Go with my (Grunf) design with ccs tube and no OT!!! 😉
 
Getting some AD1865R SOIC to DIP adapters made, designed by the mighty Prasi. Be a couple weeks before they land. Should make trying the 1865 more reasonable. These have optional 0805 decoupling capacitors of VA & VD rails.

Ordered a few AD1865R from @Legend Electronics to try with the adapters.

Honestly this DAC building business has more of a dark side than just building amps. You wanted to build a tube stage, look at what happened to skrstic above. He only wanted a little DAC to play music... now his wife has probably left him.

Hell of a creation @skrstic, hope it raises your neck hairs. You must have $500 worth of iron and oil caps alone. 😳
