Looks like some kind of record cold temperature was registered earlier this night at Enontekiö Airport located in the most North-Western part of Finland (68° 21′ 52″ N, 23° 25′ 39″ E), -44,3°C at 2:10 AM, 5th Jan 2024.

Here in south around the capital area we have had mostly around -20°C for the past few days, went the other day outside for a walk, with right clothing no problem, rather refreshing, but I had to press the mittens against the face once in a while.

Not only are the days really short here at this time of the year, but it's been overcast almost every day all day. A couple days have been downright dark.
At this time of year, the sun hangs low in the sky. A bright, sunny winter day is beautiful in my opinion. And the sun shines right in my house and the whole room is sunny - the house has excellent southern exposure (and eaves to keep the sun out in the summer).
And it looks like we're going to make up for having no snow cover all winter, starting tonight.

It can get pretty gloomy and dystopian especially for solitary souls during autumn and early winter until first snow covers the ground and makes everything bright again, helps a bit with the mood, and when the sun is up only for a few hours and mostly behind a thick overcast, at this time of the year over here it's a bit over 6 hours of daylight, skokie's gets some 9 hours, Richard in bangkok gets 11+ (hope he's ok), brisbane nearly 14, etc.

Would preferably relocate at least temporarily during darker time of the year to a sunnier place, not necessarily warmer though, if the means were around..

Fire, flood & earthquake, haven’t done a fire yet. So with flood and earthquake this post almost fits in with a weather catagory!
Earthquakes so far have only been mild ones of the three I have been through so far.
Flood is a B…. Flood brings mud everywhere. Clean, clean and more clean. Let electronics dry out. Things with back up batteries can often be repaired. PC Card traces leading to the battery will be eaten away.
Machines can be taken apart, cleaned and then greased.
Best about a flood is that nearby folks can help with repairs and parts. When you begin your call with “been flooded” everyone I spoke to bent over backwards to help.
For some reason my fire extinguisher company likes me. They stop by regularly to check and when needed recharge my 9 fire extinguishers. Also keep two at home. Now that I think about it, actually have used them three times so far.
One time someone was using my main massive Felder saw to cut a piece of salvaged wood. Hit a nail, sparks into the dust collector bag, with all the air started a fire! Turning off the saw also turns off the dust collector. The idiot was looking around for the nearest fire extinguisher. It and the sign pointing to it were right behind him. In front was the fire hose! He doesn’t work for me anymore.
Another time a woman grinding metal caught her pants on fire! Quickly snuffed out.
My insurance company regularly conducts on premise fire inspections. Only one cite as the guy no longer here had left an electrical junction box cover off a location in the woodshop.
As to earthquakes, the good news is when they are over, the aftershocks around here aren’t much. Of course around here even the earthquakes aren’t much. But they do happen. The one I experienced in California was also a mild one. However when working in California or other earthquake zones you don’t count on gear staying in place so everything is bolted to the floor and some also gets added steel to bolt it in addition to the roof!

@simon7000 you are about 100 miles east of me, there are faults just east of us in Lake County, but nuttin' like the Madrid Fault Line, or California. There are reasons that this part of N. America was barely populated before, and even after the Ice Age.

I felt the New Madrid a couple times when I was in college; once at SIU, and once at U of I. A lot of people didn't believe it was an earthquake at first. My buddy insisted it was a big truck driving by. Then we walked out the door and everybody in the neighborhood was outside. Then they announced on the radio that an earthquake had just hit.
Even though we are smack in the middle of an earthquake zone, and they warn us the big one is coming, the only one (2001) in my time, I was on the balcony, heard a rumble, my feet went wobbly and I noticed the water sloshing out the sides of the front pond.
Tried to call the parents to check on them but both the land line and cel were overloaded. Took about an hour to get through.

We too are experiencing a little snow and our first cold of the season tonight. Supposed to get to -12º. Something we may not see for many more decades.
They are seldomly anything other.
I shake my head at those who believe in all-season.
At the very least use all-weather.
It only takes once to realize the difference and the value.
Oh, Cal, you west coast people are such wimps. 😁 Currently -32°C with a wind chill of -35°C. Possibly to get to the -40s overnight with wind chill.
If it ever got that cold here, the entire west coast would grind to an immediate halt.

Windchill, that's kinda funny. Makes people watch the weather channel I suppose.
We used to say it's -32º and windy so bundle up even more. Now they put a number to it. I guess that's the really cold people telling us how fast the frostbite and hypothermia will set in, I'm not sure. One thing I am sure of, is I will stay here and be called a wimp while others deal with that kinda ****.
Being slapped in the vace with a wimp comment is better than being slapped in the face with ice crystals.
