KEF Q150 breeding

Erin (@bikinpunk) tested and measured the Q100 driver dimensions HERE.
Did he also measured the freq resp like this?

Because no wonder that the tweeter response is like a mountain range.
These need to be rear mounted and flush with the baffle.

Tweeter response is not pretty at all, with flush mounting... makes quite a challenge for xo! Red is on-axis, blue 30 and black 60 deg.

I am planning to make a mask to cover the frame, a bit like KEF has in R and Reference series. A curved mask works as waveguide and will tame some of edge resonances too.

Here is Erin's test of R3 Meta https://www.erinsaudiocorner.com/loudspeakers/kef_r3_meta/ which has 51/4" coaxial. The box has sharp edges but midrange response and directivity is pretty smooth!

I haven't received my Q150s yet. I hope that it's mask is not glued too well...

A big manufacturer like KEF "must" make different series of speakers to sound different. Like tmuikku wrote, the customer who perhaps listens to speakers at retailer, must be able to hear the difference in sound, to convince herself that more expensive is much better! Low price means worse cabinet and simple xo design (time spent in development). In case of KEF also the driver is different despite it looks same as LS50.

Q150 replaced Q100, BR port is now on the backside and CEA response is much better.
I have the original LS50 and crossover could really be better made. And they did with the new version! Actually the newer generations all look refined and measure better - would be interesting if they had a personnel change.

Bad reviews and/or sales?

I mean within any company it could also be just a bad move from marketing/sales/management department.
You can be the best engineer, but if they set unreasonable goals, there is only so much you can do.
So it's not always the engineers fault.

Been interested in trying these drivers for some time. I bought a pair earlier this year and got damaged in transit. Guy shipped them face down so all the (considerable) weight squirming around on the nice surrounds. Such a shame.

Well I just won a pair of compete Q100 in original boxes. So the saga continues. Will use the coax in a 3way OB, probably hi pass about 500hz, hopefully if they reach down there OB.

Have you seen this thread...

I also have a pair of the 8" coaxial. The tweeters were open circuit but I've managed to fix them with some AliExpress aluminium domes....thread somewhere! I thought they may be good in a Pass Slob type design maybe

I haven't got any info about shipment of my 2 pairs of Q150 from Auditorium. I guess I must email them... Perhaps I must put this project on idle until I notice someone else selling Q100 or 150 for cheap.

These are on sale for ~ 300 euro/pair here on several places. I would be willing to arrange buying these and ship them to Finland. Shipment with GLS would cost some 31 euro. When interested, PM me.

I got this answer from Auditorium, I will wait...

Good morning,

Thank you for your message and patience. the speakers you ordered are still on backorder and will most likely reach us in the coming week. I'm happy to refund you the amount until the goods arrive, if you wish.

Mit freundlichem Gruß

I’ve looked high and low for shallow woofers that can go up to 600Hz + (for a LP of ~300Hz to meet the coax ), but there aren’t many options.

I tested the GBS 200 to see if I might be a usable option, despite its limited x-max. You know, because it could be used in multiples.

But unfortunately it’s best used under 120Hz. @DaveFred has a GBS250 and is probably testing it shortly.

But the SB is probabaly one of the best behaved shallow woofers. Just don’t rely on that 12mm x-max. 6-8mm is more like it…

I have thought about using this sub to make a 3-way speaker on a tripod like B&O A9 (but oval)
No, but the B&O A9 design doesn't make much sense to put a subwoofer in, especially if you can custom make/DIY the design.

Looking at some of their marketing pictures, you would rather put the subwoofer into the cabinets/tables/other things.

Looking at the distortion graphs of those SB woofers, I don't see reasons why it would sound bad.
Except with SB it's a bit of a hit or miss how "fair" their T/S parameters are
