KEF Q150 breeding

Covid flu seems to go away! But I have another bigger issue interfering this project - divorce.
I decided to leave my fiancee after 23 years. Our daughter moved away for studies and I pulled the trigger. We are now fighting about the house etc. And I happened to meet my old gf from 24 years ago... Happily my dogs fell in love with her too!

One pair of Q150 will go to my daughter and the hobby pair moved to my new "girlfriend's" apartment accompanied with some of my vintage gear. They sound amazingly good as such, also bass is decent with modest spl.

Q150’s are my main mixing monitors now with a twist. I modded the enclosures last year and created a passive cardioid design similar to the Dutch and Dutch 8c. This took a lot of trial and error to get right but I’ve got a fairly even directivity out of them down to 500hz which was needed with all of the reflective surface area of the screens in between them. They’re actively crossed to a compact stereo subwoofer at 100hz that sits behind the screens with the drivers firing left and right. This arrangement was possible only because it’s such a nearfield installation. For the regular listener, a pair of fwd facing woofers in a box/stand would be the better way to go.

The Q150 will likely go back on sale near Black Friday for $350 a pair or less and it’s a great stepping stone for DIY efforts at that price. If I had the space , I’d grab another pair and do a quick and dirty dipole with the Q driver mated to an 18” woofer or a pair of 15’s……that would be a fun project for sure. Or for those that can’t get the clearance from the front wall?…..take the D&D approach the whole way with a new enclosure and two rear firing subwoofers coupling to the wall. One of those Dayton DSP plate amps and another ICE module and you’ve got a $10k for around a grand with some effort and ingenuity.

Can you folks reassure me that the q150 driver is top notch and will open the door to near field desktop nirvana? I am thinking about getting them, trashing everything except drivers, do everything from scratch and tune to my particular desktop.
I was referred to this idea from this post in the thread I've started:
Post in thread 'How to build the best possible audiophile desktop?' https://www.diyaudio.com/community/...ssible-audiophile-desktop.418737/post-7816877

A big manufacturer like KEF "must" make different series of speakers to sound different. Like tmuikku wrote, the customer who perhaps listens to speakers at retailer, must be able to hear the difference in sound, to convince herself that more expensive is much better! Low price means worse cabinet and simple xo design (time spent in development). In case of KEF also the driver is different despite it looks same as LS50.

Q150 replaced Q100, BR port is now on the backside and CEA response is much better.

That's quite a disappointment, so Q150 on sale is not a good way to get a superior driver. Is there anyway to get a ls50 driver except just going ls50?

The later R range are a better driver than the Q, but are more a midrange driver. Stiffer cone and surround and an evening lower profile 'z' surround than the Q. Much cheaper than LS.
My current diddlings.....

@IamJF In the "high performance 3 way" thread you mentioned
Made tests recently with a subwoofer and 2 SB 8" drivers and different positions as a sub stand for LS50s
I wonder if you would tell more about the performance of this combination, of the ultimate potential of something like this. Certainly, it would be more expensive than harvesting drivers from the R or Q-series, but with an appropriate high-pass on the LS50 and excellent drivers below, what do you think? How do you think it would compare against your (excellent) mains?

Thank you,

Bill

The Q150 driver is a fine driver……. Meta is a bunch of marketing Mumbo Jumbo……it can only assist with the tweeter back wave and as such, the distance is short to make it irrelevant…………soak up that midwoofer back wave and that’ll pay dividends in spades. The XO is fine for a simple coincidence setup…….phase is physically in check so no Danny Ritchie gymnastics needed.

The baffle on the 150 is too narrow……that’s the main flaw along with the crappy box. Fix both and you’ll have a really excellent near field desktop solution.
