Guess I should order some knobs and put a cover on the Iron Pre.

I was able to dial the offset to 0v. Sound is good, however the volume in one channel is lower to start with then the other. Does this indicate an incorrect wiring of the potentiometer?

Does it make a difference on which side (input/output ALPS) the ground wire goes?

you need to determine, on pot itself, 3 pins - CCW, Wiper, CW

them CCW is always GND, CW is signal feed from selector, Wiper is signal going to buffer

it is pretty straightforward, you have same designation for potentiometer pads on preamp pcb

in short - positive phase is one section of pot, negative phase is second section on same pot

if you post detailed pics, we will help, most likely

edit: swap input interconnects between channels; if problem stays in same speaker, problem is in preamp

also - try with different source and interconnects; same logic applies
