Crazy things your parents said

In my youth I lived in a religious (protestant) environment. It happened more than once a few cars drove to the school yard and stopped just in front of the school doors (which drew a lot of attention of course). Men in suits with serious faces stepped out and went into the school.

They came to pick up a student to go to church and municipality to marry the girl he made pregnant.

But this couple, clearly, did not marry for sex. It is very evident from their behaviour. They were literally shocked they had to have sex to have children.
Unbelievable 🙂 They are surely not produced in factories.

I grew up very Irish Catholic. Avoidance of all things sexual was a big theme of my childhood. In fact, my father was grooming me to become a priest (yuck) until I was about 12 or so and made it clear that under no circumstances was I going to enroll in the local seminary high school, and that I was never going to become a priest.

The theory then was that boys and girls had to be separated or else they'll be distracted from their studies. The fact of the matter is that no matter what you do, teenage boys are going to think about girls. The undertone was that even thinking about girls was one of the gravest forms of sin.

The irony is that as soon as you let the kids off the leash, they go wild. Exhibit A, college. When you go to college, the Catholic girls are ready.

I knew someone who lived on a street were one side all the girls went to a girls only school the other side went to a mixed school; the result was that it was clear that the side of the street that the girls went to a girls only school, many of the girls were pushing prams in their late teens, but the girls that went to the mixed school didn't. The girls who went to the mixed saw boys as dirty smelly things, the girls who went to the girls only school saw boys as forbidden fruit, full of mystery.

We had children (never adults AFAIK) nearly drowning in the cold sea from a phenomenon called “kramp”. It was said to have to do with eating before swimming so of course we ignored it. Until I experienced it myself that is. Nasty phenomenon. Maybe it was a combination of food and the water temperature.

Your dad is right with f&*( Google (for more than 1 reason).

Some urban myths are true. So don’t drink too much coffee or your hair will become red 😉

The digital world not necessarily documents everything or the right information (or data was from before the internet). While you are of course right about anecdotal evidence I regularly experience the opposite. So things that are definitely not true but documented or digitized as fact.

I have quite a few examples of that.

I repeat no documented case ever. There is no proof you got a cramp because of eating before swimming. Anecdotal evidence is just that. Anecdotal.
I don’t know about any documentation, but I know from experience that if you eat TOO much you will get cramps from exertion. Never drowned, but been there done that had to suffer the consequences. If you eat like you’re on a diet it should never be a problem.
