Smoking. Do you smoke? Why and what do you smoke? Why not?

I feel like this isn't discussed enough among people. I'm sure we've all seen materials intended to make people aware that smoke detectors are needed in the home, but I'm not sure I've seen anything similar about getting radon levels checked. Around here, it's only ever discussed when trying to sell a house.
In the UK when you sell a house you have to make a declaration about radon. IIRC it's more of a problem in areas where there's granite, but very variable.

If you're spending a lot of time in a basement/cellar you'd be wise to get it tested. In the UK you can order detection kits for around £60 and get an analysis.
Electronic Radon detectors are available at Home Depot here so I'm sure they can be had across the pond.

It's actually become unheard of to smoke indoors these days. If you haven't already, it's time you joined that club. I enter potential customers' houses constantly and if they smoke, it's always outside. I never smell it in their house. It's been like that for the last 20 years at least.
Only my friends get inside my house, nobody else.I can't refuse my friends the first two cigarettes...I won't die because of it, but even if it's -20degrees outside they'll have to accept all the doors and windows open for the time being there 😉

My dad used to smoke Camels and could never stand the smell indoors even though he
wasnt a chain smoker.
He did stop cold turkey one day after a doctors visit and that was a happy day for the
whole family
Did smoke pot as a teen only but never a smoker maybe because of that smell even though
the smell of a cigar (lightly) sometimes is enjoyable

To those of you who smoke cigarettes:
Light one, keep between ring and middle or little fingers, and draw the smoke through a closed fist, though the ring of thumb and first fingers.
Lit side out of fist, as usual.
You will have a terrible experience, and start thinking about giving up.
This is how the native pipe 'chillum' was smoked, the air and smoke combine to give a terrible exhaust gas / burner experience, you will have a sore throat and will be short of breath, from the same cigarette you put in your mouth.

Think it over.

Here's an experiment for cigarette smokers, comprising of seven simple steps:

1. Take a big puff of your cigarette, but don't inhale the smoke.

2. Blow the smoke out through a doubled up thickness of tissue paper.

3. Observe the dark brown tar stain that appears on the tissue paper.

4. Repeat steps 1 and 2, but this time inhaling the smoke deep into your lungs.

5. Observe the almost complete absence of a tar stain on the tissue paper.

6. Ask yourself, "Where has all the tar gone?".

7. Think about it.

Nicotine is addictive? Not for me. I dont smoke but I do chewing/snuff tobacco. I can stop at any time only draw back for a day or two is a slight headache. Other then that no strong desire to use it. Heck coffee is more addicting then nicotine at least for me as I like my coffee strong. 🙂

Safest nicotine product is nicotine gum, lozenges and patches. The gum is the cheapest in 2mg and 4mg doses.

Why I use it? For personal reasons, not sure if it can be talked about on this forum but there is some scientific studies done on nicotine that has benefits.

In the olden days cowboys chewed tobacco and even gave some to there horses.😉

Who'd have thunk it! 😉

I use Imidacloprid for thrips and leafminers on my citrus trees, its a synthetic version of nicotine.

Nicotine was one of the first agricultural insecticides used in farming, it was banned due to its high toxicity and collateral damage.
Y’all go right ahead with that, i’ll pass 😳

I’m quite curious about why audiofrenzy thinks nicotine beneficial because unless one has worms or some other parasites I don’t see a upside? Maybe PM it to me as it probably would bring the po po 😎

edit; If I don‘t spray, the little suckers (literally!) will damage the leaves to the point of stunting all growth, I never spray while blooming/fruiting and research shows the residuals in the fruit to be barely trace amounts if applied as directed.

In the southern US during the 1970's (the time and place in which I grew up), tobacco was such an ingrained part of society that it was difficult to find someone who didn't smoke, chew, or dip. Smoking and chewing were even allowed at my high school outside of the buildings. On any given day you could find knots of students puffing away between classes around any of the brick "butt tubs" built by the VICA masonry students. I was among those sucking down cigarettes by the fistful; it was almost a perverse "duty", and I continued to fulfil it for 13 years from the time I was 13 until I turned 26.

I became determined to quit during my surveying apprenticeship. One hot summer day I found myself standing with 30 pounds of gear in the middle of a swamp, with water up to my knees, cigarette dangling from my lips and and huffing with every breath. It occurred to me that my career as a surveyor was going to be exceptionally short unless I quit right then. So that evening on the trip back to the office I flicked my last butt out of the vehicle window and have never smoked since.

That was 27 years ago. In the time since I took the money I saved and invested in a college degree, which translated into a successful career. Quitting smoking was the hardest thing I've ever done, but has also been the single biggest investment I've ever made in my health, my finances, and my self-respect. I look back on my life now and can't imagine myself having been a smoker. I also shudder to think about how events would've developed had I continued.

All I can say is that if you're thinking of smoking, don't. It just ain't worth it. And if you're thinking of quitting, just do it. You'll be glad you did.

Those are withdrawal symptoms...

The degree to which it affects people varies widely same as it does for alcohol. There's an attempt to demonise nicotine, but separated from tobacco there's no need IMO, vaping etc should be regulated, licensed, taxed, like alcohol, nothing more.

Something doesn't need to be physically addictive to be addictive though. Bodybuilders are addicted to PEDs because of how they make them look/feel...
