High Quality Passive PA Speakers?

Wow, nice place Patrick, I see the dilemma now…….I designed and built our new home starting 2016, just now getting to the ’entertainment wall’ which I was told the rest had to be done to satisfaction of the boss before I could start on it (which happens to be now, after almost a year of punch list and add ons!) but good thing is I negotiated that whole wall of real estate as my domain (even if it is the living room) but don’t think i’m a tyrant…….I had to compromise many things to get it, including some colors that still make me cringe every time I go by. 😆

Yeah the room is a nightmare. Acoustically terrible, and because it's the focal point of the entire house, giant speakers are apparently verboten.

One idea I had, was to make or buy something that makes a visual statement. For instance, the speakers from Avantgarde Acoustics are huge, but I think they also make a statement. But that idea was voted down by the peanut gallery.

Last night I came this close to buying a pair of the Elac point source speakers. Watched a bunch of Youtube videos, read the threads on Audiosciencereview.

From what I can see, there are basically two "camps" of speaker options right now:

1) Two way and three way speakers which are capable of mid to high-ish efficiency. I came real close to purchasing a set of three-way Wharfedale speakers. Wharfedale seems to be offering a lot of value these days, and it's not a brand that I've considered in the past. (I mostly buy JBL and Infinity stuff, and I have some Behringer and Kali too.)

2) Point source speakers from Kef and Elac

Again, I came this close to getting something from Elac... But just couldn't get over the fact that they're less than 85dB efficient. That's really really low. In Youtube reviews, people were saying that they had to bump their amplifiers from 100 to 200 watts. I have a difficult time imagining how a bookshelf speaker with a four inch midrange will sound "dynamic" when it's getting hit with 200 watts of power. Just seems like a recipe for a very "undynamic" speaker.

So I'll probably have to bite the bullet and make something like a Danley SM60F.

The prosound two ways are affordable and efficient. I have a set of Yamaha DXR12s and they will pin you in your seat, they are REALLY dynamic. But my Waslo Cosynes image better.
Really bad idea. Elacs have DI of 5 and beamwidth of +-65 degrees above 900 Hz; below they are almost omni, like all small speakers. And low sensitivity/low maxSPL. Such systems will get lost in that huge, open, reverbarant space of yours. And flood it with late-arriving reflected energy. It's like trying to sonorize more regular room with JBL Pill.

The only small speaker thet will somewhat work is D&D 8c, but it still not very directive and kinda expensive. And boring. I mean, you are the guy I have always admired for out-of-the box, innovative, slapped together from delaminated 3D-prints, leftover MDF and epoxy filler bleeding edge designs - and you'll end up with a typical 2-way? (ノ゚0゚)ノ~

In all honesty, what about a white pair of speakers? Will she go for that?

Yamaha DZR series comes in white in my neck of the woods...
Yes they are a premium over the DXR... buy still cheaper than a divorce...

If my spouse wanted decor matching speakers I would take her to look at (not necessarily listen) to the B&W 801 D4 or KEF Blade 1 Meta or Vivid Audio Giya G1 Spirit and ask her to pick her least ugly speaker. If it must be hidden, I would consider CT 8 LR... If you like 2 ways and waveguides GGNTKT M1 (or upcoming M3)

Then you can rework the speaker crossover at home to your heart's content.

I really didn't want to buy that Yamaha piano. It's just a brand new iteration of the same model she played over 30 years ago?

"Don't you want an upgrade" I asked?

I offered to buy a 7'+ grand piano, lovely tone and weighs almost 1000 lbs. Worth the price of small car and heirloom quality.

She thought I was being over the top and thought the piano was was ostentatious.

I guess we all have our spouse problems.

Someone here previously mentioned small MTMs, which I think is a good idea to keep things smaller and still get the output levels you desire (with help of a sub).

The drivers in this Seas kit are very good and can put out surprising levels - Seas Bragi MTM kit

Even if you just change the HF drivers to something better ie. bliesma T25B in WGs, you'd have a very potent package.

Take a look at the off axis performance on these.
