RV build TL, OB, Horns, Top horns with TL or OB bass, sub or no sub?

As per a new thread posted today, looking for the best alternative for a very modern RV remodel and considering full range. I prefer OB but not sure it will work so a folded horn might be the way to go but if going to build something a snail shape enclosure would be a bit more fun than a regular box shape horn. My wife, incredibly tolerant, loves snail shaped speakers, she loves a great system far more of course, why not satisfy all our needs and wants at the same time!

RV project thread

I want to stick with my 10 watt tube amp(off grid eventually so will likely go D class then though hard to give up tubes!)

In the middle of a complete rebuild of our RV, everything one could imagine I am doing it so any links to a DIY plan for a good full range snail would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Rick

In an RV you don’t have sufficeint space for OB.

Any TL/MLTL can be “folded” into a snail shape, but i think small + small sub(s) to help at the bottom. Bass resonances in such a small space would be an issue, and multiple subs give you some latitude to fix that.

Not a snail but gives you an idea. A stright ML-TL folded into a shape specific to client’s needs.

Thanks!
I have read a great deal of your posts and very much appreciate all you do for us DIYers! That is a cool design, perhaps I could, with much more work, curve the bottom areas to to make it look a bit different🙂 Of course I could fake it a bit with side panels, etc.....still get part of the look.

The subs would be behind it, I know I do not need two 15's but I like the idea, my last house had 4 in seal boxes with tons of power but never as great as the huge dual 15 horn loaded subs I took out to save some space and always regretted doing.

For now getting buy with a Martin Logan Vision X sound bar, $225 on Craigslist, mounted on the ceiling 2 ft from the back wall, need room to finish the insulation, sheathing and shelves. Pretty dang good sounding compared to when mounted below cabinets that were up there before I tore off the fiberglass end cap and added 2 ft to the lengtht of the RV, that was 4 times more work than expected...

I love the look of some of the horns with front openings to give them a bit more visual appeal. My favorite are probably not going to work out as to big, dual folded, etc....above and below the driver. One could get creative with the shape and sides.

My wife likes your design as long as we do something a bit with sides and use some nice veneer on the front, maybe painted sides....

Thanks again!

I agree with dave, better make a small bookshelf if you live in a limited space like an RV. A friend who lives in a tiny house of about 3x10m made a copy of my bookshelfs for there and he is very happy with it. Before he had Philips 9710's in big backloaded horns powered with a 300B SET. But he retired, divorced and scaled down his life to this tiny house in Portugal in the wild and that big horn and SET amp does not fit the space and the electric power availeble. So now it's a gainclone amp and a copy of these... OB or hornspeakers need space, what an RV or a tiny house can't deliver.

Driver here is a Mark Audio Alpair 10.3. And these are more broadband than Dave's example with a Fostex driver, but the cabinet is also a bit bigger i think. Mine is 236x300x416mm and tuned to about 45Hz.

Myself, if I were re-designing my RV, I would go with the TABAQ.
They are roughly 83cm tall mini towers, 10x13cm CSA. They could be mounted on a wall, or even imbedded with your wall insulation for a stealth setup.
Using a 4" driver, you'd be able to go down to about 50Hz. In a small space like an RV, you'd get output below that too. That'd be a killer setup.

Thanks! I know it was wishful thinking but DANG! I just want something different. I have the room for a small TL, etc so will look more into them since same space needed for a monitor and stand. I do want some style besides just a box, just have to and planning on a wide band driver, with separate subs, so I will be able to afford a very good pair of them. As in most things upper middle price range is the best value overall though there are low cost great speakers I want something quite good but reasonable. I will have to see what the QTS range should be then look at drivers and as many reviews as I can find.

Thanks again!

Was writing the last response when you posted, I need to be sure they can play fairly loudly as we sometimes have a drink or two and get to dancing a bit and like it loud but quite good of course as well🙂

As posted on the main thread, I have pretty good space to fit them, several hundred hours of work to add less than 2ft to the length of the RV, now I want to use it🙂

The TABAQs would fit right there on the wall on the sides of that 54x84 window. You could invert them to have the vent on top and the drivers closer to ear level.

They usually like something close to the 0.5 Qts. Loads of drivers were tried in the thread about the TABAQ, so plenty to choose from TB, Faital and Peerless. With a TB 4" driver I had in my living room (bigger than your RV), I played music to a lot of friends, and the first thing they look at are the subs in the room. When I tell them the subs are not on, they usually say, "no way!" Granted, they won't do 20Hz at THX levels, but they will be loud enough for your small space.
If I may add... Is there space under your couch? If yes, you could add a TL sub under there, adding more oomph to the low end, and getting vibrations right through your couch is nice when watching movies!

I have plenty of space to fit subs, up to two ported 15's easily though I know I do not need that much I love big subs sound. I had two 15's in a massive folded horn in my home with 1kw that played very low and sounded incredible but just too big and ugly so switched to 4 sealed 15's with 3.6kw to match the more than needed output level. Either setup worked great with my Edgarhorn Slimlines on 10 watts per channel. I wish I had measured their output as rather significant, I do not want or need that in the RV of course but still on rare occasions want to get it on, hell I am only 70 and have to keep up with my sweet 58 year old very fit dang fine dancer wife🙂 I might end up with just two tens for sub duty though I have two different powered 15's, two different sealed 12's, separate 1kw high efficiency 1kw AB amp, high end 1.1KW car audio amp....lots to work with. I have a good table saw, routers, etc....under a canopy so building subs, speakers, etc will be pretty easy.

I want something more dramatic looking than simple tall slim towers, sound is most important but spending thousands of hours on our remodel to very high levels of material and finish( several years in the design and building, much more work to be done, bought most everything for pennies on the dollar on craig's list, etc.....as I always do me best to repurpose, recycle, etc...)

I really like the look of the Woden Coniston double front horn, that could be built to look great and can fit easily into the space I have.

The RV is a huge project, 3 times more work for everything than doing a house remodel and more work than it would of taken to build a big tiny house. Started life as an 05 Teton Liberty Experience, bought because it was the best chassis to work with though built in Wyoming not that well insulated and a very very involved job to make it so. Adding to the length to fit my desk, second door, audio system, bookshelves around the window, fold down from ceiling TV, etc...designing and building chassis extension was the hardest by far but turned out incredibly strong.

I have modified and or designed and built from scratch many things including houses, race cars, competion car audio systems, furniture, etc and this is my end game project, building to live in for good and one day leave to my sweet wife so she can move it to her sons property. I just never want a house again so making this place exceptional in all ways.

I just demands some great performing and looking speakers! Of course when done, only 1,000 hours to go (probably a great deal more) I can play with many speaker designs so maybe I should do something simple for now.

We seldom sit and listen, my wife seldom sits down at all though I made sure to be able to move the couch forward and back, side to side, to line it up when doing serious listening. Anderson windows and doors, 2cm soapstone counter tops and desk, high end appliances, fixtures, flat panel cabinets with far more storage than the raised panel solid maple units removed. lots of book shelves, the big soaking tub....weight will not be an issue, likely less than it started out with which was 24,500lbs with stocked kitchen, clothing, water in the tanks. Triple axle, disk brakes, hydraulic slides and four 17k lb jacks. Over 80 maple cabinet doors and drawer fronts, two raised panel maple doors, all maple trim, my BB cabinets will save a great deal of weight even with the soapstone tops. Looking seriously at making Shou Sugi Ban siding for the whole thing as well and adding metal roof, too many fires around here.

It will not look exactly like this as the program just will not let me do all I want and things are going to be tweaked as the build progresses but close enough🙂 Some unfinished areas in the plans, minor tweaks mainly, will work out room treatments, speaker and sub designs, etc...already finished two dedicated power circuits for the system, fully shielded, very solid new rear wall/sides, all screws and glue with precision cuts on everything.

It spent 8 winters in Mexico, towed with big rig, no cracks, no leaks, nothing loose. It was a very expensive unit when new, got it for 20 cents on the dollar, delivered. We had a high end 43ft toyhauler that was constantly falling apart, total crap compared to this, as nearly all RV's are. It did not need a remodel but we have our own tastes and I must have projects! We gave the the cabinets away to be reused, some of the finest craftsmanship I have ever seen but not our style. It had dual pane windows but aluminum frames pass a lot of heat and cold through them as well as condensation issues, now all wood framed windows I took apart and sealed very bit of wood on before installing them as well as converted all but two from casement to awning opening. $25k in windows and doors, all new, have under $2k into them, 7 extras going into a shed/shop next project. $12k in new blinds, many spares, $200 new. $7k Ekhornes triple recliner sofa, $700 looked brand new. $4k oven, barely used, got two for $225. Over $120k in parts, appliances, fixtures, furniture.....around $15k invested.

Very Chinese decoration on the wall. 🙂
I'm myself starting to build a retreat in from of the ocean using containers. I have no choice but using containers as the house needs to be easily taken out later since it is farm land.
Having a background in architecture, I also use drawing apps to come up with stuff. Those app at the time (ArchiCad and FormZ) were at their beginning and a blessing as I would hate to draw by hand!
I used SketchUp as you, but also newer version of ArchiCad and Shapr3D on the iPad.
Anyway... about the sound.
You might be able to put a pair of synergy horns in there. They are rather work involving, but the people who built them are very pleased with the result.
Or...
Do a pair of corner line arrays.
Both will more than look the part, be a cool subject of conversation with invited friends, and will give you plenty of sound!
