I'm looking to buy a PS for the FH9HVX, and your SMPS630-G (+/-44V | +/- 55V ) comes highly recommended - seems just the ticket. I would love if you could give me a little bit of clarity on a couple of items:
1) In your documentation you note that the SMPS can generate quite a bit of heat with a low load or at idle, is that correct? I don't expect to be using more than 20watts continuous across the entire amp, including heat losses, and was wondering if this would require a fan? I've seen many others note how cool your supplies are, just trying to get ahead of it.
2) You have 2 types of Capacitor PCB's, one seems to allow for resistors, inductors, and a bypass cap, while the 630-XX recommended PCB seems primarily just for caps? And would you mind confirming the maximum cap value per rail? I've seen variations of answers across DIYA and your documentation - from 12,000uF, 20,000uF, to 50,000uF in post #255.

Hi John,
The heat is generated from the transformer and it won't be a problem at all.
You don't need a fan if you are using it for class-AB amplifiers
For the capacitors PCB, you will need this

You have the option to buy it fully assembled ( I highly recommend this option) or unpopulated and you have to source the BOM parts.
The populated version comes with 4 * 10000uF 80V ELNA capacitors.
The SMPS will work with 40000uF at the output, the 50000uf will also work.

The dimensions are 10CM * 8.5CM and the capacitor height is 5CM + 1.6mm PCB thickness + PCB standoffs 3mm

But you have to make a Y-CABLE to make that work because the PCB has one output only.
I'm about to order a 630-G for the FH9HVX https://www.diyaudio.com/community/...onscious-100w-class-ab-for-lean-times.353512/ I'll also be using a single 630-G for both channels.

If you have the chassis space, use a cap board for each FH9HVX channel. Keep the total capacitance within the range Sami recommends. You’ll have a quasi dual mono supply. 😉

Hmm interesting. Vunce, you don't have issues with the SMPS630-G going into overcurrent protection with 40,000uF per rail? The SMPS630-G manual says not to use more than 12,000uF per rail (24,000uf total) of additional capacitance.
This may be starting to approach the cost of a dual linear supply, but I haven't done gone to the trouble to build an All Cees BOM in Mouser to do the math. Maybe not quite.

Thank you Sami for the details and clarity - very helpful! Unfortunately the ELNA Caps are a bit too tall for my enclosure - chassis height maxes out at 8+ cm. Bummer!

Vunce, do you mind sharing the non-cap components you're using on your cap-pcb boards, or Sami, do you have an appropriate BOM? I see bypass caps, led, mica?
Finally Sami, do you have any recommendations for external enclosures for the SMPS630? Was looking into a simple BUD or Hammond box...

I have similar questions as r66cort...in this configuration (+/-55V SMPS630-G with 2 extra capacitor boards [1 per rail]), what else do I need besides the 8 bulk PS caps? Are any special connectors or cables required?
Also, I see I need a latching SPST switch...I plan on using this one https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/612-PVA6LRE212G1 which will illuminate green when it's on, and red when it's off.
But what kind of IEC power entry do I want for my amp, fused or unfused? If fused, what amperage fuse? And is also having the power entry module switched preferred, or does it matter?
I have access to a well-equipped metal fab department at work, so I'll be building my own chassis. I plan to put the whole PS+extra cap boards and both FH9HVX amp boards all in one case.

I have a small chassis in stock, I will check tomorrow if the SMPS with the capacitors PCB fits inside it.

SMPS630-G is good with 20K per rail, a total of 40K. you can't use it with 80K Vunce SMPS is a different model.
If you plan to use the SMPS630-G with two capacitors PCBs then you connect them in parallel like Vunce setup. I can adjust it for you to run at 60K
That switch may work, but Its better to find one with separate LEDs, I also have to find the wiring diagram for you to make that special function work

For the IEC, you can use anyone you like, fused or not fused.
The SMPS has its own fuse on board.
Also, the IEC with a switch is also OK but as long as the SMPS has a standby function and that eliminates the need for such a switch so it is not needed.
You will turn ON / OFF the SMPS via the front panel LED SWITCH. the switch must be latching type

I believe I found an old enclosure laying around that should fit the 630-G and be sufficiently compact - an old Adcom speaker switcher with ventilation measuring 21.5 x 14 x 6.5cm. Please let me know if you have something that might be more suitable.
Further, it seems the 2x Cap PCB (a la Vunce) might be the way to go, with your 6800uF recommendation. I believe I'm interested in the +/-44V SMPS, so expect these 80V CDE SLPXs would fit the bill nicely (5.24A ripple current and 49mOhm ESR). There is a 63V as well - which are shorter, 4.44A ripple and 59mOhm ESR, but I assume higher ripple current and slightly lower ESR would be beneficial here? If the 63V looks within tolerance - happy to save a few pennies. Would require the 60k adjustment, if possible.
