Markaudio Alpair 10.3

Thanks a lot then i think i will be building a pensil, but i wonder how is the sibelius speaker able to play so low in such a small cabinet, and what took him so long tuning it? i tried builiding a tqwt myself based on the dimensions on the sibelius but that one rolled of steeply on 80hz

I doubt that Harely is buying sufficent drivers to get a special version.

Sims have Pensil 10.3 hitting the same high 30s F6 anechoic same as sibelious. In room it will go lower.

that is a nice looking speaker design but dont see any reasons to build this over the pensil as it is a lot more work
I agree its more work, a few extra cuts. I do not know your skill set or tools available so it may well be more than you would want to tackle.

Short story, of my experience of course in my room to my ears so keep that in mind.

I have built several MLTL's that I thought sounded good, of which two in particular stand out, a Tabaq TL with Peerless 830987 and Jim Griffins Alpair 6 MLTL with the original Alpair 6, I suppose it would be called the 1st Gen. While I would never say either are the be all, end all, they just simply sound "right" and are a joy to listen to.

I also built Jim Griffin's Alpair 10.3 MLTL but I never thought it sounded right no matter what I did. I thought it was the speaker drivers, something in the 400 - 500 Hz range I think just sounded off to my ears and this after several hundred hours of play (I stopped counting at 500+ hours).

I have never tried a Pensil which would be designed with its own specific target in mind.

I got the bug to build something with the 10.3's since they were just now sitting, and found Nandappe-san's web site maybe a month ago or perhaps a little longer.

I was drawn to the DDBH-B13-ML because of its unusual design (to me anyway) it looks like a very short horn ( I like horn loaded bass) with a port and was intrigued so I built it.

Simply amazing, the Alpair 10.3"s seem to match the enclosure perfectly and the frequency anomaly is no longer present, then again they are not in the same position but still in the same room. The bass is all there and while I will always admit asking a full range to do bass duty as well may not be best way of doing things I am now rethinking that position, with a smaller driver say 4 inches or less perhaps they are best relieved of bass duty (or played at lower volume) but no problem with the 10.3

What surprised me mostly was it actually sounds like horn bass, it has what I call the effortlessness, openness and dynamics of a bass horn but its really an abbreviated horn in front of a reflex port to my eyes but sounds like a horn.

So, based on that experience (and in a speaker building mood) I have now started on a pair of Nandappe-sans's SDDBH-T15.R-AD-01 for the Alpair 11MS since I have wanted to try the Alpair MS series.

Good luck, and I wish you success with whichever design you decide upon.

I would also like i horn design, if i had the drawings on the sibelius i would definetly have made those, but i cant seem to find any front ported horns so think i will settle on the pensil. If i knew how to use simulation programs i would try designing my own.

Harley mentioned it in one of his youtube videos that he discussed it with Mark to make adaptations to the driver so he doesn't have to use any electric filter or components.

The MA 10.3 used in the pensil has an electric filter in it?

Even if it looks the same, the sound that comes out will be different if the internal structure is different.

Why?

At the frequencies involved the internal structure makes almost no difference — the folds will introduce a bit of HP filter.

One can take a Woden Pensil, and easily transform it into am ML-Voigt (folded or not) that has the same response.Same volume, the pipe is 2x as long.

the shape of a voigt means a resonance train that is lower in frequency if the pipe flares. This makes them harder to damp the ripples and why you see a restricted terminus in most of the good ones.
