Thanks again! Do you know of a manual? I've seen a basic one, but none that goes into much detail, especially Settings. For example I see lots of menus about squeezebox, which I know nothing about. I also occasionally get squeeze errors, but they don't seem to affect playback.View attachment 1009789
Dug through every menu to find it and it was right there in General. It should show on my Acer's screen after next reboot. Of course, you can use the Web based access in addition to that UI. So you could start music playing at the Dahile machine, stop or change what's playing later from your phone.
I'm not seeing a menu supporting cd rips on that UI...
If you have a squeezebox appliance connected to your network, it'll send you audio playback to that as well. https://www.ebay.com/itm/255287397181 or https://www.ebay.com/itm/294670393174 for examples of units still obtainable on the used market. That 'ol HP desktop could be pumpin different music playlists to every room in the house, pool / sauna and garage too.Thanks again! Do you know of a manual? I only know of the short guide you speak of. I wish I knew exactly how to set the initial optional startup, so it bypasses (I assume) the hotspot method and goes directly onto your home network (I assume). Exactly how that works isnt explained anywhere I can find. But I'm glad its an option and you can just figure it out yourself, eventually...

So I jammed Daphile down my Acer CB3-532 Chromebooks's throat, by installing it on a USB stick in UEFI mode;
- I used the MrChromebox's UEFI BIOS reflash to permanently remove Chrome from the system and allow boot of UEFI OSs. Daphile is one such OS. Linux Mint is another.
- For some reason, it just wont put up the Hotspot, but will connect to my router after I set the whole thing up on a separate PC first.
- Was hoping to take advantage of that big battery, but it wont dim the backlight. It wont shut the back light when you close the lid (Linux Mint does...)
- I figured as long as the display is permanently on, I'll try the local UI. It put it up, but no trackpad...
- it works with my XMOS input DAC, but doesnt find the on board audio (Linux Mint had trouble with that also)
- Now I have a UEFI boot Daphile on a USB stick, FWIW. I wont put it on that hardware permanently. I'll leave LM on it.
I think it sounded pretty good, streaming from my server. I'll have to check out that "play from memory" button, to see if it makes a difference I can tell. Should be the same thing as if a local hard drive with the same music content were installed, right?
I'm sure the two idea killer issues could be addressed somewhere within the linux system behind Daphile. I'm only interested insofar as this system suggesting a SQ in accord with my other laptop hardware, just to see if I'm onto something. Other than that, I wouldnt suggest using one of the Chromebooks as the metal part of a Daphile system.
Glad I could save it from the Chrome OS's update demise - LM will be good for years and everything works except the headphone jack.

I assume the IP will be automatically set using the wired connection and then I can connect to it from any other device via wifi. You mentioned in a later post that you installed Daphile on a USB stick--is there any advantage in doing so? It's still not entirely clear to me if I can run Daphile from the HDD that it's installed on with a monitor or keyboard or if I have to use my MacBook to access it. 🤔That's one reason that I wanted to set up a multiboot system and put Mint or another distro on the spare hard drive and access Daphile from it. Maybe it's possible to rip CDs using the MacBook by accessing Daphile as a headless client--the CD tray would just open up and close without turning on the monitor connected to the Daphile system or maybe running Mint from the second drive would let me do the same... I guess I just need to play around with this and see what happens. 😉Wired connection is a little easier setup for Daphile. Of course, the Chromebook I have doesnt have a wired ethernet port... You should do fine with that HP system running Daphile. You'll be playing your rips in no time! Plug in a USB DAC and you can play one playlist through it, another completely different playlist through the headphone port. If it can do two, I'd assume it'll support a different music stream to every audio sink (DAC...) you care to plug into it.
I also remember reading somewhere that someone installed Daphile but wasn't able to find the directory where the music was saved locally. That seems odd to me because I assume most Daphile users want to back up their music libraries and it shouldn't be that hard to do so. I'd guess that almost any Linux distro would display all directories and let one copy the Daphile music directory over to another drive or NAS...
The advantage of having it on a stick is that it's portable - you can shove it in any piece of IA hardware (that will boot it....) and it'll run Daphile. That advantage is offset by knowing myself, I'll lose the stick somewhere :') Like between the cushions on the sofa...
Daphile is a music server. You cant "access it" as an application from within another booted OS; instead, you boot Daphile and access it from another system, like your macbook. Unless you run Daphile as a VM within another OS, which is somewhat beyond my scope to discuss.
My stick boot on the Chromebook hardware was digging through every file on the Mint HDD looking for music - I had to tell it not to use that drive for music explicitly. It automatically saw that drive and figured there might be some music there. Then it started with all the music on my NAS share. Unsure how Daphile missed some directory where someone's music was saved.
If you have monitor, keyboard and mouse, you can turn on Daphile's local UI and control it at the machine it's running on. AND you can also control it from any system with a web browser. Not all functions are available at the "local UI", but you can play music and you can select which channel - say, headphone jack or USB DAC - the music goes to.

Once you have installed daphile then access the settings tab and configure the ripping settings...set a storage device to save rips to, set the ripper to start on insert and set it to eject when finished.Maybe it's possible to rip CDs using the MacBook by accessing Daphile as a headless client--the CD tray would just open up and close without turning on the monitor connected to the Daphile system
Then, even without accessing daphile either locally or remotely, you can rip simply by inserting a cd...waiting for rip to complete and eject then rinse and repeat.
If you want to follow the action then access daphile from your Mac' browser at daphile's advertised ip.

Thank you for explaining this. I now have a much better understanding of how Daphile works. 🙂If you have monitor, keyboard and mouse, you can turn on Daphile's local UI and control it at the machine it's running on. That's great information and is exactly what I want to do. 🙂 As far as the ripping settings go, do I need to manually choose the correct CD drive "offsets" or is this done automatically? Do you have any recommendations before I start ripping--I really want to get things right the first time around and not have to go back and clean up metadata or deal with other potential problems. I assume that if the FLAC file from the CD that I rip matches the AccurateRip database, I'm good to go...Once you have installed daphile then access the settings tab and configure the ripping settings...set a storage device to save rips to, set the ripper to start on insert and set it to eject when finished.

All the mention of different levels of SQ from different PC’s, got me thinking have you disabled the onboard audio? I followed the instructions in this, it made a big difference to the SQ. http://www.modelpromo.nl/Audio-Dandy_streamer_Daphile.htm
You can do it manually but there is an one-time auto calibration that works fine (requires you to use a known cd but many common disks work here...'Pulse' Pink Floyd is one I have used) Once the calibration is made write down the value so that if you ever need to reinstall Daphile you won't need to re-calibrate your drive ;-)do I need to manually choose the correct CD drive "offsets" or is this done automatically?
If you use the setting that starts ripping if tags are found then yes. If tags are not found then the rip does not proceed.I assume that if the FLAC file from the CD that I rip matches the AccurateRip database, I'm good to go...
Metadata is very good and images are stored as separate files and not embedded.
I have never had any problems with any other players using daphile rips, daphile gets it right.
Occasionally the rip happens but artwork is not found. I do a search of Discogs or Amazon for the images and save them to the folder of the ripped album and rename them to 'cover.jpg' which daphile and other players use for playback. (yes, all the images are named 'cover.jpg' in their corresponding folder)
You can check on the ripping page whilst a rip is happening that the accuraterip and gracenote logos appear bottom left.

Personally I'm not too concerned if I receive a bad AccurateRip number occasionally. I have daphile set to auto-re-rip 2 times and I use a usb laptop type drive. If it doesn't improve, so be it. It's still a perfectly listenable song. I believe AccuateRip is basically "trial by popularity". It just compares your rip to other people's.
If I was still a perfectionist, I'd go use EAC with a cd drive that has been rated at excellent an excellent ripper (drives do matter and are ranked). And if one drive didn't work, I'd go to another. I think I have 3 of them, but thankfully as I've aged, I'm no longer a total perfectionist. I used to do it this way.

How is the internal audio soundcard related to playback through other audio devices?All the mention of different levels of SQ from different PC’s, got me thinking have you disabled the onboard audio? I am afraid that article has a number of misconceptions, especially those related to alsa, UAC2, pulseaudio. Daphile does not use pulseaudio at all, it's not even built within the daphile configuration of gentoo. UAC2 does not circumvent alsa, it's "just" a USB audio driver coded within the alsa framework, just like drivers for all other audio devices.

It sounds pretty straight forward. Having said that, one thing that I remember reading sometime ago (maybe on a dBpoweramp forum) was the importance of having a consistent Metadata structure to avoid problems down the road; especially when it comes to Various Artists and compilations. Maybe this isn't an issue with Daphile and I'm just splitting hairs... Are there any advantages for storing Metadata as separate files rather than having everything embedded?If you use the setting that starts ripping if tags are found then yes. If tags are not found then the rip does not proceed.

I can definitely relate to do this and just want to get good lossless rips and avoid obvious problems like jitter and noise that would have a negative impact on my listening experience. I don't have high-end equipment, so hopefully I can achieve this by using what I have and the right offset settings on Daphile...Personally I'm not too concerned if I receive a bad AccurateRip number occasionally. Hi all, I've been running a daphile based server for a few years now, I also set one up for my father in law who has a massive cd collection (retirement project!), he messaged today to say gracenote wasn't working, looks like it's not getting metadata back from gracenote, I tried 3 cds, 2 were unknown and 1 was returned via music brainz.
I did a search on this forum and it looked like 6 years ago the license key had expired for gracenote and a new beta version was needed, is this what is happening here ? I'm guessing others are facing this issue ?
Thanks, Ian

Not sure if it is just the most recent beta lacking some code, as when I went back to the previous beta Gracenote was working again. I was unable to downgrade from within Daphile which also points to a code problem. Perhaps reinstall previous working version.Hi all, I've been running a daphile based server for a few years now, I also set one up for my father in law who has a massive cd collection (retirement project!), he messaged today to say gracenote wasn't working, looks like it's not getting metadata back from gracenote, I tried 3 cds, 2 were unknown and 1 was returned via music brainz.

Finially got to read through the article - looks promising. However when I went into the bios of that Acer Aspire 1, it's so cheap they dont have a section to control the audio I/O. So I have the "HDA Intel" on board audio disabled in Daphile itself. Is this good enough? Equivalent to doing so in BIOS? Or do I need a new hardware platform that can disable the on board audio, to take advantage of Daphile's native "UAC2"?All the mention of different levels of SQ from different PC’s, got me thinking have you disabled the onboard audio? There is no "native" UAC2 in linux/daphile, it's just an alsa driver for USB audio soundcards, just like there is an alsa driver for Intel HDA for the internal soundcards. The internal soundcard has no effect on playback to the USB-audio driver. Disabling the internal soundcard in bios may reduce power consumption (tinely), that's all.

Hello
thanks for the reply !
I did as you suggested and rolled back to 21.10, put in a CD that wasn't working yesterday on 21.12 and this time it generated the tags however is still showing as getting the source from MusicBrainz, looking at the ripping log it seems to point at getting tags from musicbrainz - but not 100% sure
albumartist=Ryan Adams
album=Gold
tracknumber=1
title=New York, New York
artist=Ryan Adams
date=2001

freedb_discid=d7107e10
AccurateRipDiscID=016-00279856-01e3bf40-d7107e10-1
AccurateRipResult= []
and then rolled forward again to 21.12 to check and same result - was pulling back the tags from MusicBrainz
just noticed @DRONE7 - I tried a CD that I ripped last week and it was showing as 'powered by gracenote' - I'm guessing its just recognising that previously it was ripped via gracenote rather then fetching the tags again - any albums I've not ripped previously on daphile are coming up with music brainz
so it points to me that gracenote has stopped working regardless of version from the new year (approx)

What does this button do, exactly? It seems to change the sound of a certain radio stream I like to listen to; as 256K CBR MP3 stream as shown by Daphile. In my audio setup for the XMOS USB, I have "Resample to max rate" and a max rate of 96000Hz.
When I press it while the stream is playing, is displays "Processing..." briefly and then the SQ seems to change. Thanks!
