Seas A26 Devore Style Build

Hi all, I have a cat378 and a26re4 from a stalled project.

I wanted to repurpose these into a similar large volume cabinet that was being discussed here.

Has anyone refined plans that would accommodate this pairing? I’ve found a lot of speculation and discussion. But I’m fairly novice on box and crossover design and was looking for something like planet10 produced (he was using a diff tweeter).

My best diy speakers were a bagsby continuum design, and my efforts to craft my own always fall short

It's also the setup (concerning drivers) in the Devore Ourang Outang O/96 btw, but that implementation is not that accurate or good. Ii hear phase issues and a resonating (in the midrange) cabinet. The version of Planet10 is probally better, first of all because the cabinet is probally a lot better designed.

that audionote AN-E is at least made from thick plywood and has bracing i see, i have the inmpression that the Devore only has a ply front and an unbraced mdf cabinet when i did the knock test when i heared it. But it uses a better woofer probally as that Seas A26RE4 is a great one. I don't know what the Audio Note woofer is that is in that AN-E

The older entry level AN-E's used Vifa drivers, but the newer ones have fancy hemp cone woofers with sliver voice coils. No idea who makes those.

And the cabs have very minimal bracing, a strip of wood across the sides and back half way up. Not sure what that's supposed to do? Maybe that's how Snell did it?

My main system is a pair of Wharfedale EVO 4.3 towers crossed over to a Rhythmik F12 around 50 Hz with DSP and Dirac. It's a great system, but on a lark I put together the Madisound A26 kit and just fell in love with it for some reason. I just can't get enough of the A26 and I can't put my finger on why. Something about that lightweight 10" driver maybe.

After building that, I designed my own coaxial mini monitor using a single SEAS driver and active DSP linear phase crossover w/ bi-amping and I got the bug for DIY. A shoebox that plays down to 60 Hz from a time and phase aligned point source? Nice.

If I ever upgrade, it will be to replace my Wharfedales with something in the 60-80L range w/ a wide baffle, which is how I ended up in this thread. Some beautiful ideas and designs proposed here.

There are quite a few threads of varying ages on this forum that focus on single-capped 2-ways. Various arguments have been made for the following configurations:

SEAS T35 tweet + A26 woofer (SEAS A26 configuration)
Morel CAT378 + A26 woofer w/ phase plug and alnico magnet (O/96 configuration)
Morel CAT378 + Eminence B102
SEAS 27TFFC in 10" waveguide + A26 woofer

...or 3-way designs like:

Troels DTQWT-212 mkIII: SEAS T35 tweet in custom waveguide + JA8008-HMQ + optional rear-firing Eminence Deltalite II 2512
... and other all-SEAS 3-way systems that have obtainable 8" mid-woofers w/ phase plugs

Based on what i've read and what is obtainable, I'm leaning toward the Morel CAT378 + Eminence B102 design based on the argument that the B102 will be an overall better performer than the SEAS A26 driver and the lower cost of the Morel compared to the SEAS T35. I would also be open to the idea of adding a mid-bass driver similar to the Dayton RS180P or a quality SEAS equivalent.

After summarizing the very intelligent ideas of different forum members that I now realize I should have CREDITED, do any of these jump out as surprisingly good or bad? This is an exercise for me to learn how to select combinations of drivers for a big baffle Devore-style speaker.

Thanks everyone for your thought provoking posts. I enjoyed reading this thread more than a few times.

You are right. From what I have been able to glean the A26RE4 seems very tough to match for natural rolloff. User John Busch was actually gushing about the confusingly named BP102, which would not be as smooth with nature rolloff, but is "dead flat" below 2k and has "1.5 + times the Xmax it can play louder and with way more dynamics. It is also 35% more efficient, double the power handling, much more ruggedly built and can work well in both reasonably sized ported and seal alignments. Moving mass is similar to the Seas." So maybe for an active system or one with a well-designed passive crossover, the BP102 might beat the A26RE4 on measurables and value but not in a single-cap 2-way by a long shot.

Link to post about BP102 compared to A26RE3

There's also some debate over whether the new B102 is as suitable as the old style version (to be found in the thread linked above).

If you search me, i used b102 wide open with cat378 (single 5.6uf cap).
The a26 is lower in spl, so morel would need attenuation to match.

Freddy liked the old b102 for how high it went.
It may go up there but it doesn't mean it sounds good up there.
And the stronger magnet makes for less bass (go and do the math, qts .23 ?).

The bp102 takes off past 1k, good luck with that.

Hmm interesting, I like a the interest this is getting as I’m definitely hoping to make a wide baffle Audio Note or Devore clone soon.

The decision between simple Xover with the A26RE4 vs that woofer could be a difficult call to make.

May it help:
I bulid a O96? clone AR26(magnet add+ DIY phase plug) + Morel378
The XOver is relative simple, the sound is comparable my AN E Silver Hemp

Love your posts on this. How do you like that B102-Cat378 after a while? Would you still go with the B102 over A26RE4?

Good info on the BP102 performance. Maybe that would be a candidate for an design that includes dedicated mid-range 3-way?

This is extremely bad ***. Can you share more about your speaker modifications and port design?

Bravo!

If it bad why share it? One correction the the bottom graph is 1cm from the bass driver not the bass port,
