I'd like to see a news anchor drop the line:
"And meanwhile, the news seem to be steadily deteriorating..."
Raining here today, the heat pump is nearing completion, we've used the wood stove a lot for the last few weeks.

Most likely rainfall measured at the airport. I get my numbers from the Uvic weather station at Torquay Elementary. Who knows how accurate their rain gauge is?
And yes, it's a lovely day here. If you didn't watch the news, you'd think everything was back to normal.

Some numbers for areas a more deeply affected that us here on the Garden Island.
All that water’s gotta go somewhere, and anything man builds that gets in the way, well you know the rest. Livestock losses in lower valley areas will be “biblical”, and I use that word cautiously

The news is not improving here on the mainland.
Abbotsford, et al. Fire burning out of control at floodwater isolated RV holding lot on Sumas Mt Rd. Firefighters can essentially do nothing but watch from the barely dry roadway adjoining.
Apocalyptic disaster movies unfolding in real time before our eyes; where’s Dwayne Johnson when we need him?
Too soon?
And here I was happy that the leaves are coming off the trees without inches of ice bringing the limbs along with them like last year.
I bought some cedar deck chairs from Tofino, made from trees that have fallen naturally as opposed to cut down for lumber. Beautiful stuff.

Hard to turn on the radio or TV anymore except that I want to hear some good news about the recovery. No such good news yet other than the incredible job people are doing for one another. It's staggering how they come together to help.
Heartwarming actually.

I'd been wondering when the BBC would report on this, finally today there is a short film of a cow being rescued by someone on a jetski.
I'm pleased to say that has just appeared on BBC. Curious of the delay for the other news, but glad so far all of you are safe.
Only one death reported. That was a woman in her car caught in one of the landslides. They have hinted to expect more.
Yup, the Coquihalla Highway section of #5 is pretty seriously messed up, and will take probably weeks to safely complete a full geotechnical assessment extent of damage and many more, if not several months to effect even temporary repairs. This is a section of road covered by the docu-drama series “Highway through Hell”. It’s really quite scenic during the late spring to later summer, and way more fun than the Hope Princeton. This is the strangest Google Traffic map I have ever seen. The profusion of red dots indicate storm damage to southern BC's highway system.

Good luck trying to get exemption to testing at the border crossings;
“But officer, my driving app looked at the road closures and said this was the fastest route. I promise I’ll be a good boy and not get out of the car, I’m an UPS driver and have lots of practice with my 2 liter water bottle”

Highway 7 is open between Agassiz and Hope again. Highway 3 is expected to be the first major route to reopen. Trans Canada (hwy 1) and Coquihalla (hwy 5) are a ways off yet.
Until June we had not heard the term heat dome. Until last week we had no idea what an atmospheric river was. Now both are etched pretty deeply in our psyche.
Thousands of farm animals have perished.
Which makes me very sad.🙁

I'll have to call my brothers on the 'island, close to Port Alberni. One lives off-grid and has severe back issues.
Condolences to you northeast-coasters. You have been in news even here in Finland now. Extremeties seen to loose their status with climate change...
I'm happy to live in semi-continental climate - never too hot or cold and hevy storms are very rare here. Next week is supposed to start looking like winter.
