Nice setup Jim. I think i might try polymer’s in my next version. X’s capMx/regulator is powering USB/I2s section also ;)

Hi Vunce,

If I dare as passive parts is always a delicate question (rocketship guys can not stop themselves to critisize while they multiplicate soldering projects w/o learning something usefull for their hobby and as I know you are not from this camp I permit myself to input) and is about all the surrounding when the good technology is already chosen when it comes to try between different brands/models and few variation with the main parameters -ESR,ESL, capacitance, voltage, induction variation due to the leads spacing, dielectric, etc- :

I would go for the 5V section of the AD1862 for the Nichicon PSA serie. Not for the 12V area while nothing should stop you to try as well. Datasheet joined.
The more you willl increase the capacitance and reduce the voltage rating, the best ESR you will have at the risk of oscillation. To experiment that I found the 100uF/16V to be often a good candidate as main local decoupling of DAC chips and if you try iirc the 860uF/6.3V you should hear something totally different ! Long time ago at the beginning of the R2R Soekris hype, I advised that caps ref to boost an area of theSoekris DAC and people whom tried liked it for a better subjective result. Not guaranted here of course (there are no better caps, it's always a correction related to your whole setup), try & error and experiments is your best friends for the last setup when you chose already the oap you prefer.

Just having a quick look at my populated boars and yes it is silkscreened wrong. DATA and LRCK need swapping .I hope to test the board in system tomorrow. I didn't have the optical receiver you specified at my time of testing and so used one from another build which is 3v3 so maybe that will work for me.

@jimk04
Your post reminds me I was saying in my recent posr 1 week ago, that I would test a converter board using the DIR9001. I tested the board yesterday but 1st thing I noticed was, that indeed it's using the WM8804 so I cannot make a comment on possible difference in performance. Sorry.

Hey no worries!

I swapped data and lrck.....woo hoo it works. 3v3 is fine for my DIYINHK optical receiver. Need to try coax at some point but this is sounding nice. Hopefully the polymer caps on the digital sections and the lt3042 were worth it! Shall think to use this spdif board now in another Miro build with the Euvl/Ripster output stage.

Shall try the opa1656 later

Thanks Miro for following up this design and fault finding

Hi,

Thanks for this awesome project.

I have built two DAC boards. Unfortunately in both cases, I do not get any analog signal from AD1862 - just a small noise around 3Mhz frequency. I have got just 2 AD1862 chips from Paddy Garcia - I used the same chips in both boards. I connected directly (without shift registers) jlsounds board as per documentation and forum (4.7k resistor + J4 closed).
I attach oscilloscope outputs/inputs probed directly on the AD1862 legs with 1kHz test note being played.
Thanks for any suggestions.
