Regarding Texas,

Energy experts identified lack of system resilience to cold temperatures as the culprit, not wind or fossil fuels.

And here is a more detailed explanation.

Texas is not tied in to the national power grid. As virtually none of the in state power plants are equipped to handle temperatures below freezing there is no effective freezing prevention. So the windmill blades are not heated to de-ice, the gas turbine cooling system water lines freeze etc.

So expect real fireworks when the folks who subscribed to what was supposed to be less expensive variable rate electricity suppliers get their new electric bill in the thousands of dollars even after rolling blackouts!

Good morning from a cold Finland with −25 ℃ here in the south just outside the capital.

Yesterday went to the archipelago and snapped some photos at sun set, it was only -13 but did the fingers hurt from the cold when I had to take of my mittens to handle the camera...

I hope folks are acquainted with the 30-30-30 cold weather rule! At 30 below (doesn't matter C or F) with 30% humidity exposed human flesh freezes solid in 30 seconds.

So I am glad to hear it was -13 when you snapped the pictures! I wear gloves insides cold weather mittens when I have to work in the cold.

In really cold climates one does not come in from outside and warm up with a cup of tea, that would shatter one's cold teeth. Instead you start with something a bit warmer than outside, ice cream like things!

I carry a sleeping bag and high calorie food in my car, in case I get stuck in winter. Around here they tend to close the interstate roads when they can't keep them clear. So every so often folks are stranded in place. Don't even want to consider what happens if you slide off a road in the middle of nowhere. Cell phones of course have mostly changed that, as long as you have service and the rescuers are available and can travel.

One of my pet worries is discovering a tree has fallen across the road at night. Also seen folks the morning after they found out about ice on the roads!

Bundle up, stay safe, enjoy the crisp cold air.

Ed: Not sure if you have ever experienced the Scandinavian style house entrance. My first winter in Helsinki I visited a friend and was suprised to wander into the 'airlock' and almost have to strip to underwear as the house was so warm inside. Not sure how widespread being in shorts and T-shirt in the house whilst it's -20 outside is, but the Sauna culture suits me.

I recall my first trip to Stockholm in mid winter... Warm airport to car via heated walkway, car to heated garage under customer's building.. to toasty office space...

No need for much clothing anywhere!

I grew up in a house with a vestibule. Easily maintained a 20 F difference on entering. However no need to overheat the entire house, just the nursery when needed.

I come from Ålesund, which is a small coastal city.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, -15c in Ålesund is the coldest I've ever experienced. It was way colder than balmy -32c in Tynset.
Some years ago I brought my wife from -23c not far from Oslo, to +4c in Ålesund, she thought it was much colder in Ålesund.

Glad I don't live in a place like for instance Tromsø, nice place but can get windy and cold.

Won't anyone think of the turtles! Texas weather: Thousands of cold-stunned turtles rescued - BBC News

Seriously that is a lot of turtles to care for!

That happens fairly regularly on the northern gulf coast when it gets down close to (or below) freezing, there are volunteers that go out and pick them up as the wash ashore...I think most go to the aquarium in Panama City Beach for a nice warm recovery. The ones down there (a good bit further south) probably considered themselves safe from such things, but they’ll be well cared for.

People freak out over these thing like they’re the last dodo but as you can see there’s plenty.

I’ve heard they’re pretty tasty but I wouldn’t know! 😛
