The Weather

I was out driving to Cleveland from Pittsburgh in -30C weather (January 1994) and after I parked the antifreeze did fail and freeze. It did crack the engine block, but as the car was past 450,000 KM and it was a small leak I did not replace the car until spring. It was reasonably fresh antifreeze! As a result I aim for a lower temperature rated antifreeze since then.

Maybe you could use some kind of propane or kerosene heater stuffed under the front with the tarp to keep the heat in or buy a small inverter generator and use synthetic oil in it for long life. You could still use the tarp with it to keep the heat in and to hide it from theft. They are usually very quiet running also.

...the water temperature was 100+ C. When I pulled over and opened the bonnet/hood (*) I saw water bubbling out from the cooler/radiator and I had to have the tow truck to come and take my car to a garage.

It was almost -20C in the morning and I guess that was too much for the car battery and also ruined the cooler/radiator. I don't think the engine is damaged but that I will on Monday.

If the cooling system would be empty of coolant, then in some cars the temperature meter could show low temperature even if the engine would overheat, but in your case it sounds like you had coolant but didn't have enough glycol in it, ie not enough low freezing point and as a result froze, so when the engine got warm it only melted the coolant inside the engine block but because the radiator was plugged due to the freeze plug the pump couldn't circulate the coolant and so the coolant starts to boil only around the block causing poor cooling and local overheating, causing the expansion chamber to bubble and may even overflow.

Antifreeze coolant are usually colored typically with fluorescent color, colors varies like pink, yellow, orange, green which helps detection of leaks with help of UV light.

If you have filled up the cooler with only/mostly water over a long time to just maintain minimum coolant level, then over time the mix have probably become too diluted and lost antifreeze capacity.
High concentration antifreeze can work down to −37 °C so this is not a problem.

If you are handy enough then drive the car to a DIY car service station, drain the old coolant (one should never drive with the same coolant year after year for several reasons) and add fresh coolant, I think in Sweden you have OK gas stations, they usually have DIY stations?

Can't remember it being that cold -- but the records say it's correct, perhaps a bit south of Cleveland, i.e. Hopkins Airport.

I told ya about the time that the nuns called all the crossing guards back into school as it was -10F.

I chewed out my Ford dealer 2 weeks ago == had the Expedition serviced in the summer and they topped up all the fluids == wiper fluid was frozen solid! Used some hi-test isopropyl to clear it out.

Jack,

Even worse I was on the ballpark roof 170' above the ground! Was a bit colder on the way and warmed up by a degree or two in Cleveland. You probably don't remember it as only fools would be out in it.

Worse yet I have been out in other cold weather!

I do own full thermal underwear, insulated vest, down coat, face mask and mittens over gloves. Gloves are actually dangerous when it gets really cold as they isolate the fingers from each other and then they can freeze. So you keep your mittens on and they flip open when you need to use your fingers. Oh yeah I also have purchased the bulk pack of chemical hand warmers. They fit in pockets of the mittens.

Not too surprising when equipped you can work in cold weather, however five or six feet of falling snow does make things a bit more difficult. It still is a bit uncomfortable. But when opening day is coming things actually have to be finished.

Yesterday...

Having a walk about 1km. (0.6miles) from home, we are lucky to have "our" beach area; well it's better at summertime i guess!

Good sunday folk's.

Jesper.

When I see your photos I suddenly get an urge to sell my funds and, when Spring is here go SOUTH. Passing Lille Baelt I end up in Frederica and Germany is just minutes away ....

But as the long as the weather stays like this - Sunshine, -10C, no winds and crispwhite snow, I am happy.

Kin in Texas are cold. Temps are 10 to 20 degrees F below historic lows. Gas pressure drops due to demand for heat. But also used for electric generation. Gas-burners cut-out on low gas pressure, people turn to electric heaters. Electric grid demand is 4% higher than ever before. High winds seem ideal for all the windmills they put up, but they have iced-up. "Rolling" blackouts have become all-day blackouts. Water also comes by electric pumps, many now in dead zones, no water.
