What cartridge upgrade from a Shure V15 V-MR?

The B&O MMC20CL was their best cartridge. I gather it was possible to put them onto a head shell of some sorts.

I cannot believe what they now sell for. I once had about 10 B&O cartridges inc 4 20CLs I have a few still as keep a Beocentre and pair Penta speakers in another room.

I had a period of buying vintage Beograms. the 4000 was my favourite. I had three but sold them all :-(

If it was only a diamond cut, that would be simple. The differences are in cantilever construction and materials, bushings, etc. Jico has one-size-fits-all plain aluminum cantilever in all their styli,

OK you are changing your tune now. suddenly its the rest of the cartridge! FWIW Jico supply nearly all the boron cantilevers in the world, as well as most of the sapphire. That fancy gold plated boron cantilever on my AT150MLx? Supplied as an assembly from Jico. You can even buy the cantilevers off their website if you want to retip your own cartridge.

In their Heyday Shure did make their own Be tubes and had a number of patents on their processes, however they are long gone along with the knowledge. But if Jico cantilevers and diamonds are good enough for AT, Ortofon and almost everyone else I really don't see why you have such a downer on them.

There are 1/2" adapters on ebay. I bought an MMC-2 and 1/2" adapter last year but its been stuck in california due to the current fun. The MMC-2 range is still made by soundsmith, but without the fancy laser drilled sapphire cantilever.

If you have an MMC-2 I'd spaff £50 on the adapter and try that. You can always sell on the adapter. Personally I would consider youself lucky in having not one but two examples of the top MMs ever made.

I will check tomorrow what I still have. There will be one on the beocentre and a spare. Maybe 20en

At the time, 15 years ago or a bit more I was picking up 20CLs for about £100

I sold my last one. Boxed and as new about 6 years ago for around £240

A quick look on ebay and seems I should have hung on to them longer.

That sounds like official Linn doctrine. We don't buy that here.:D

I agree totally. My first TT was an LP12 bought new in 1983. They are a great TT but even Linn have upgraded the subchassis to be less resonant and now the arm board is part of the subcahssis About TIME.

Look at what Linn have upgraded and go down this path if you want to improve the sound.

My SP10 with EPA100 and Stanton 881 was less than 1/5 of the cost Linn wanted in upgrades to the LP12 and sounds far better than my LP12 Ittok Troika combo.

I sold my LP12 bought an SP10 EPA100 and Stanton 881s and still had change left.

My suggestion is change your arm, if your V15 is in good condition you will need to spend a lot of money to better it. So if you like the sound, I would recommend you change your arm. Linn arms are not the best, buy a Hadcock 242 & rewire it with VDH silver wire. The 242 is ideal for the V15 & rewired it is considered better than the SMY V.

Cheers

My Arm is the Project carbon 9CC as fitted standard by Linn for a while (they must have accepted they could not make a better one themselves for the budget at the time).

From what I know they are a decent arm.

Yes Linn have steadily moved the Linn LP12 up market so now a fully specced table is over £18k

How many of those upgrades are really worth the money is a question difficult to separate from marketing / brand loyalty and reality

I swapped to the later Project arm, I changed to an external Muse PSU. I did not change the bearing to a Circus as that can be a matter for debate.

I see many after market additions, many I fear are snake oil - just like the many claims for magic bearing oils.

I am not saying my LP12 could not be improved, but where does the really noticeable change sit and at what cost.

The Golf GTI was developed constantly to suit trends and permit higher sales price. Is a new one really better than the original? In many ways yes, in others no.

It would be interesting to stick a new one on my system to hear the difference yes. I wouldn't pay out for one though.

I have checked the remains of my B&O stash. I have a MMC20S a MMC20E and a MMC20EN.

The EN was the standard fitted to the Linear players.

How one would perform on an adapter I have no idea.
