I have uninstalled several startup applications and managed to lower the cpu before running Hqplayer to 1% and it has worked almost correctly, there are only one or two microcuts in half an hour.

Your processor is not fast enough.
I built an I7-9700k pc to run hqp.
I think you're doing well to get 256 without problems.

single core performances and memory bandwidth to the processor is key.
i have a hugely congested windows 10 (many things that runs in background)
with an i7-6700k, overclocked to 4.6ghz and i am able to do almost every filter with ADSDM7EC @ DSD128.

-EC variant @ DSD256 is not possible for me.

with the "classic" ADSDM7+512fs i can go DSD512 all the way across the filters and any audio input file...

HQP 4.3.3 -> Ethernet -> BBG+McFifo/McDualXO -> DSC 2.6.2

i have made some tests ago booting with a "clean" linux distro and i saw that things went wayyyy better...

Switch cpu governor to performance. And things will go even better. :)

P.S.
For the heavy modulator ASDM7EC and DSD256 i5-7600K is enough for me.
And the server on the i5-9600K and water cooling generally covers all my performance needs.

One thing i can rely on this is that i have made a computer for a friend of mine some time ago and he has mounted this very cpu (i5-9600k) what i can say for sure is the i5 of the 9th gen outperformed my i7 6th gen (o-clocked as much as it gets..) almost on every configuration.

Newer gen cpu from lower tier will go far better than older generation's from higher ones... no doubt about it.

not tried to switch to "performance"... stuck on what ubuntu gave me as default.

You a preferred distro ?
 
I've been using the canned hqp embedded os.
Put it on a usb stick, and boot from the stick and you're up and running.
Of course this is for a dedicated hqp machine, and you need the embedded license.

Working great for me. And not much effort to setup, much easier than having to install linux and then hqp on top of that.

I can do 5ec at 256 no problem.
Don't remember about 7ec though, lol.

I believe that HQPlayer has no alternative in PCM to DSD conversion quality.

With my passively cooled I5-8400, I typically use the following HQP Desktop 3.25.4 settings:
naa:Botic, Buffer 100mS, DAC bits 32

PCM Defaults: closed-form, shaped,sample 44.1
SDM Defaults: closed-form, asdm7, bitrate 44x256
DSDIFF/DSF: conversion poly-lin, Integrator FIR, Noise filter Standard

Preferred music. Jazz + Rock. Source: CD rip 44.1 ... some DSF files.

Any other setting suggestion to try?

use the -EC modulator, is a brand new world to explore

... thanks. but I have already disabled that in the bios :D no more frequency change. it starts @ 4.6ghz and keep the max freq no matter what
 
I am not aware of the implementation of shunt regulation, which would qualitatively stabilize the high-frequency Load Transient.

not sure if grasped 100% what you meant by your answer.
I was asking you about it because i have subjectively felt a big improvement when i have by-passed the 5v onboard regulators and hooked up salas reflektor's for the output stage. Maybe is worth trying along your quest for the "perfect" DSC.

Another thing, a little nerdy... but i can't resist. on the photo you have posted some time ago of the newer version, i have seen that you have removed (or at least, that seems on the photo) the soldermask on top of the clk line. I always considered that an "extreme" measure to put in place when signal is well over Ghz... And also, you need to proceed on that with a grain of salt, more time than others the ENIG finished can degrade the signal more than the soldermask. not sure if that is a trick needed in such "low" frequency domain as it is the one in the DSC topology... but that is just a speculation :eek:
