....different germanium power devices that do have data. They all seem to be low power rated compared to similar size silicon...
What is the maximum safe, and max useful, temperature of Ge compared to Si?
Ge and Si have different physical atomic structures and melting point temperatures.
Big heatsinks is mandatory for Ge amp in class A ..even 10 watt's

Usually +85C, at junction.
Is that an answer? "COMPARED" seems to ask for more than one number.
Anyway, I happened on this book from the end of the Ge era, with comparisons against Si biasing. May be good for those who did not grow up with Ge.

I am curiousMy qty 2 of 2SB206 arrived..On the schedule is a curve tracer session with these parts.
For class A with Ge transistors self bias is an interesting option

I have real doubt those numbers are typical. But lets roll with them.
> ...germanium power devices ...seem to be low power rated compared to similar size silicon...
Typical working temperature: Si=160 Ge=70
Typical working temperature RISE above 25C: Si=135 Ge=45
135/45 = 3
For the same size mounting face, the Si device can dissipate 3X the power of a Ge device before 'melting'.
As alexberg says, often the limit is how much reverse bias you can apply and control.

Thank you for the insights. Very helpful information. It will be fun to see what Nelson cooks up for these parts.
..I have ordered quite a few different Germanium devices. Just getting started to measure them and try to understand them..
