Hi Fab
To keep you updated I have installed the Mundorf Evo series 4.7uf caps on the input side almost 3-4 weeks back. It has made a great improvement compared to the MKS2 Wima cap. Now the sweetness, big and wide soundstage is back and I am loving the amplifier and listening it for more than 2 hrs a day because of the virus lockdown 🙂
I have everything in this amplifier now, the punchy bass, center point imaging, superb instrument separation as well as channel separation, awesome vocals (mid range) and clean highs. In fact this amp makes my audio nirvana full rangers to push the base to be so clean and I can feel it during some of my local music playback. I will leave it like this for some more time till I can get the Jantzen Alumina cap from parts-express in August 🙂
Thanks

There is 3 EVO series ! which one you using ?
I used this available locally in India and he is a genuine supplier of the parts. Except Aluminium I do not see what series this belongs to though.
Mundorf MCap EVO Aluminium 4.7uf 450v
Thank you Manniraj for the update. I am very glad you are satisfied !
At least the virus can provide some advantages...
This is also good information about the input cap.
If we gather some of the best sounding input cap to make a list for the USSA5 or 3 I could even add the list in the next version of the manual.

Do is using the Jantzen Alumina and looking at various reviews this should be one of the best options but pricier as the input cap on USSA-5 amp 🙂 Having seen the change from MKS2 to Mundorf I believe the Jantzen will definitely be a good upgrade and hopefully should sound good. Anyway I have left a long pins on Evo so easily can remove and fit another cap and sell off the one which may not suit my listening impressions.
Hopefully I should get a pair of these by August when all the lockdown is over and get the caps from USA.
Thanks

Input coupling cap list
Thanks manniraj
So if we start an input coupling cap list that could be (not in specific order):
1) Mundorf Evo series 4.7uf
2) Jantzen Alumina
Others ?

Hi Fab,
I have not built your amps, so sadly no first hand experience here, and used last time PPP caps at power amp entry decades ago (MITs back then) and not again since.
But I used very recently DC blocking caps at preamp output with some success and that seems to me similar requirement than what you are looking for. You to decide if receivable or not, as not built yet into Fab's amp so may not qualify for this thread.
These Cornell Dubilier 940C caps were not truncating anything, were balanced, musical while transparent and a majour step up from the ususal audiophile electrolytic caps. These are PPP caps and I used them where ever possible in my B1 Korg, each time they proved to be worth the upgrade.
As a side note, I have 2 of the brand new Panasonic PP caps you recommend lying here, but sadly little opportunity and time to compare. The 940s are far bulkier and more expensive than your fantasticly affordable Panasonics, but still affordable and way more so than some exotic caps.
I hope this can be of some use
Claude

I realized I also have couple of MKP10 caps but not closer to 4.7uf I guess with me and looking at some of previous comments this should be slightly better than MKS. So I would put it it in this order 🙂
1) Mundorf Evo series 4.7uf
2) Jantzen Alumina 4.7uf
3) WIMA MKP 4.7uf
Thanks

I use the 940c in all my builds now. It’s just an incredible product at radio shack pricing.

Great to hear. Once you hear what this amp can do, it’s pretty amazing, and C2 I makes a big difference and is a fun tweak. Mine just runs with the same cap I built it with and I see no reason to change it, but maybe Rike Copper someday.....

I first heard of the 940 and 945 series CD caps at Tube Cad Journal -John Broskie was impressed with the 945. I am using the 940 series in a Baby Huey EL84 build right now(see attached photo). I did switch out those small red cube Wilma caps at the input of my USSA5 for a pair of the red Mundorf 2.2uf caps that I had on hand. They will be a step up but certainly not an ultimate choice.

Hey, I’ve been waiting more than a month for my BH 84 boards.....can’t wait to get those (white, rich-guy problem 😀)

I built the EL34 version and use it with KT88’s. Tube Cad Journal is a very good read for all things audio, not just tubes, although that is a big focus of course.

I voraciously read all of John's stuff, and I agree.
Yeah, the 940C is definitely a nice cap

Unfortunately the 940 doesn't fit on the PCB if I'm not missing something? The pad ist some 38x20mm and the suitable 940s are at least 54x27mm. The biggest capacitance of this series that would "fit" is 1µF with a footprint of 34x21mm. But 1µF would bring some early cutoff I think...

Thanks Do 🙂
I just need the amp to go with it now, LOL
nfsgame, don't know about your board, but where 940s couldn't fit horizontaly, I fit them verticaly (standing) slightly extending one leg...
Happy built

I also agree with you all about the quality of the CDE 940C 🙂
They are very large for a given value though, even if you can physically fit them their leads are usually to thick to fit into the pcb holes. They are perfect for speaker XO as size is not an issue most of the time.
Sorry for the off topic XO usage comment.
