Daphile - Audiophile Music Server & Player OS

Daphile does support auto meta data load when ripping a CD from a number of optional sources. It does not give you the option to interactively update that data. I have been using daphile for a number of years and see no reason to make a change. The support for a wide range of DACs, the simplicity by which the Sox enabled dsd upsampling algorithms are applied, the CPU power functions, access to external music libraries and lms integration make it a joy to use.

This question may be simple to some but here is it:

If I use the Daphile in bit-perfect mode how do your fellows control the sound volume?

I'm looking into changing the volume by changing the sample value for fine changes and a 6 step attenuation of 10db each for coarse changes. So each time the digital volume hit -9.9dB the next 10dB step is changing the attenuation at the output of the DAC and releasing the digital attenuation.

My motivation is that I'm using DSP based active filtering and I do not want to make multiple conversions.

If there is anyone out there that has some idea's how to do the conversion from digital code to driving the speakers without conversion I'm all ears

By limiting the change in the digital domain to 10 dB, the resolution limitation is not suffering too much.
So this solution is a combination of both worlds keeping the volume control high quality and simple at the same time.
It does matter if you change the code in the PC or DAC. As a very low wordclock jitter is crucial, the calculations have to be synchronous. Beside that the next analog attenuation step needs to be selected upon reaching the 9.9db in the digital domain.

I was using the MiniDSP with Built-in digital volume control that helped, now I am not using it any more because of switching system due to space saving. Is there a commercial digital volume control that can be bought off the shelf?

The newest beta has a feature loading the whole system into cache!
I think it is similar to Picoreplayer? :)

pCP - is what ? 50MB in size?

IMO it doesn't make much sense to load a standard system into RAM.
Especially if you're looking at several 100 MBs.

All apps that are running are basically hold in RAM anyhow.

What you should do is avoiding disk access (swap/log/etc.)

What IMO makes sense is full RAM buffering of the track.

Just my two cents.

Enjoy.

Yes, a member of this forum, alexcp, has boards that can be used with a multitude of digitally controlled volume control chips, including PGA2310, MUSES, and some others.

I have used a PGA2310 board from Silicon Chip for the last eight years with no problems at all. BTW, I'm in Melbourne.

Thks for the tip, currently using a tube preamplifier buffer with unity gain.

Reset Firmware Default

I have been using this player over the last 1-2 years and stop using it for a while and then restarted, I updated to the latest firmware ver. 18 from ver. 16.

It said I could reset the system settings default and I tried and I got an IP address error. Is it essential to reset if yes how do I solve this problem. Thks.

It's not essential to do the reset.

The reset will default the IP address to dhcp. Attach a screen to the daphile box and see the address, or install fing on your phone to find the daphile IP setting, or try \\daphile as the browser url, or look up the router. Good luck!

Once you reload daphile remember to set the static IP and the CPU power settings. Also check the storage settings and reload any plugins.

Hey there,
I have a problem while ripping.
My jazz CD was ripped nicely but some other CD had something like a Stop Symbol in front of the checkmark box before ripping, the ripping failed here. Everything was ripped to 0%.
(My daphile of is not connected to the internet)
Many Greetings
