What constitutes a grounding box?

I'm always on the lookout for things which may improve my listening experience. I've seen these advertised and the idea looks sound, but not the price. So, just what constitutes a grounding box? It could be argued that careful attention in cabling management could mitigate the need for such a device, but for fun it could make for a DIY project. Any thoughts, suggestions, lads?

I am not sure what you mean by 'grounding box', unless it is the box of dirt with a wire coming out which is sold at high prices to gullible people. You could make your own and it would work just as well as a bought one i.e. it would do nothing at all to your sound but might seem impressive when you tell your friends about it. Just don't tell them that it does nothing to the sound.

LOL i thought that I might have fun poked at me for raising this topic.

I cannot see anyone poking fun at you. Perhaps my extensive ignore list helps :)

Whatever these devices do is not grounding, or at least not just grounding. In most cases they create a ground loop which is not ideal but positive effects are nevertheless reported. Clearly no one understands exactly what they do. Current electro-dynamic theory doesn't seem to like them, so good luck finding a plausible explanation for their workings.

If none of the above bothers you, creating a clone should not be too difficult: thousands have already been made and users generally appear happy.

There used to be an old thread on the same topic here, years before grounding boxes became a commercial offering. Full credit to Bud Purvine for bringing the idea forward.

my alternative proposal:
take your money cassette, safe or whatsoever.
Drill one 7mm hole through its wall.
Mount a banana socket into that hole.
Connect your hifi via banana cable.
Now you have your DIY grounding box with the money kept inside that otherwise you would have spent buying a commercial one.:D
