10F/8424 & RS225-8 FAST / WAW Ref Monitor

wxn don't go to crazy with the stuffing, too much can make them sound dull and suck some mid spl out. if you go loose stuffing make sure it's not going to get a chance to come into contact with the cone. i was just on about the back being the primary reflection point, the bottom needs less it's the part that everything else sits on and as a result doesn't get a chance to resonate.

I messed up a little, my flush trim bit disassembled in mid operation and the cutter went into the front baffle before I could react. Now most of the dent will go away with chamfering but there will still be a mark at the bottom. My plan is to use wood putty to fill it up and then paint some ply lines with a pencil. Othet options i thought of are veneering the whole front chamfer or route a groove along the edge and inlay a piece of wood (e.g. Oak).
Would appreciate your thoughts guys

Nice work Sadik. Are you a steamfitter by trade? Those are serious stainless steel pipe flanges being used to weight down the Dagger.

Nice work on the backside round-overs for improved air flow.

Good luck with rest of the build.

I am listening to them now as I type. Powered with a 55w Class A amp - the ALPHA BB by Aksa.

Superb sounding combo.

Nice going Sadik.

You're close.

X, I think I struck gold tonight. Got a reply and it now seems I can get access to SBAcoustics drivers.

Excited is an understatement!

Had a look at their website, and they have so many different lines in their products page... a little hard to decide which to get.

They have MidRange, MidWoofers, and Woofers.

For example, the woofers have the CAC, PFC, NRX, NAC and SATORI.

Now, I get that Satori is their hi-end line, but I'm lost with all the others....
Trying to find a link that explains the different lines and their goals as their own website doesn't have an explanation of the lines or meaning of the acronyms.

Got a lead?

They don't really have anything like your 10F, but I already have the B80, so I would need a good woofer to pair it with.

I'll have to price them up against Usher, who raised their prices crazily in the last few years, making them a little less attractive than before. Also, Usher hasn't updated their line up for about 15 years... that's a lot of RnD gone missing.... TB and SBA have been pushing the boundaries lately. That's nice to see.

Hey all. Could anyone refer me to the most recent x-over post (Jan.11th) as referenced on page 1. A BOM would be amazing if anyone has one on hand.
I have two tc9fd ready for this project!

Here is the BOM for the XO, all from Parts Express. This is for the 10F/RS225. For TC9FD, you may wish to use a smaller value on R1 (try 2.2ohm, or even 1ohm). Parallel the 2x 27uF and 6.8uF to make one 61uF cap. There is an intrinsic DCR R4 from the inductor included in the XO sim for the woofer but do not add any resistors to the woofer.

Product Name Sku Qty Price Total
Dayton Audio DNR-4.7 4.7 Ohm 10W Precision Audio Grade Resistor 004-4.7 4 $1.09 $4.36
Dayton Audio DMPC-27 27uF 250V Polypropylene Capacitor 027-439 4 $8.58 $34.32
Dayton Audio DNR-0.51 0.51 Ohm 10W Precision Audio Grade Resistor 004-.51 2 $1.38 $2.76
Dayton Audio DNR-10 10 Ohm 10W Precision Audio Grade Resistor 004-10 2 $1.38 $2.76
Dayton Audio DMPC-2.2 2.2uF 250V Polypropylene Capacitor 027-415 2 $1.87 $3.74
Dayton Audio DMPC-6.8 6.8uF 250V Polypropylene Capacitor 027-424 2 $2.75 $5.50
Jantzen Audio 4.0mH 18 AWG Air Core Inductor Crossover Coil 255-280 2 $20.91 $41.82

10F/8414G

Got the 10F/8414G in place of TC9FD, just plugging them into position and trying without altering the padding - 2R35/16R 0hms. Impressive right out of the box - no nastiness! Possibly Dickinson's sensitivity result of close to 85dB/W is more useful than manf spec.

I was intrigued by these drivers since no one had tried them yet, they were much less expensive than 10F/8424, yet had the possiblilty of being even better in this speaker. The glowing AudioXpress review didn't hurt. Finally, I like the increased air flow due to the much smaller neodymium magnet.

Also in the Madisound package (misdelivered to a neighbor on the next block:boggled:) was a pair of 3R9 Mundorf resistors I'll probably try soon. Uppermids and espcially treble are distinctly a bit hot even though beautiful.

The improved image specificity of a matched pair was the most obvious aspect I heard, and also a more tweeter-like treble presentation. And it surely will improve with running in.

So, yes, recommended!

Always sealed for both. For the mid-tweet (full range), the sealed Dagger has been proven to behave very well - you don't want it to make any bass below 250Hz really.

For woofer, the sealed 24L works very well for extension to about 50Hz and a very nice tight presentation that has good timing.

@CGodecke, thanks for the report on the 8414G - sounds like a winner.

Chiming in with X's post, I really love the RS225 in a sealed cabinet. This is my first sealed bass design after a lot of tuned and vented speakers, and it's addictively good. Some loss of sensitivity is the only downside, but since I love my solid state amp and its ample power, I find it completely worthwhile.

Looking for a RS225 replacement on the SBA website...

Got a couple that look kinda similar.
What do you think of those?

8" SB20PFC30-8
8" SB20PFC30-8 :: SB Acoustics

8" SB23CACS45-8
SB Acoustics :: 8" SB23CACS45-8

8" SB23NRXS45-8
8'' SB23NRXS45-8 :: SB Acoustics

The first one has Vas of 66 litres, closer to RS225 of 56, and the cheapest at about $40 each... but the last two have Vas of about 90 litres... and about 3 times the price of the RS225!

Won't even include the Satori 7.5" at $200....

i am sure somewhere in this thread in many posts it would have already been mentioned about butyle rubber damping on the panels inside the box. But i want to know on which panels its most important and on which panels it would not matter if lined just with egg foam. i am sure lining around the dagger is important.

RS225 sealed is about 52Hz/27liters, above sealed is about 52Hz/23liters and because its a 5x8 incher have smoother polars up high to sum with 3 inch polars plus a improved ctc distance, now with improved ctc distance use two per side in WTW config as Dunlavy did and non symetric tilted height polars gets uniform perfect.

perceval, agree we are not used to see that 5x8 incher look but using WTW config combined 1st order slope in spirit of Dunlavy improves the weird tilted non symetrical vertical height polars that happen using odd order slopes and seen into below dirty quick simulation example, also effective woofer piston area increase to 356 sq/cm and imagine it should help on low end distortion numbers. About a fun mid tweeter from SBA look at their relative cheap SB65WBAC25-4 : )

That does look interesting !
So, maybe weird is a good thing! :)

Yes, the SB65WBAC25-4 is the other one I was interested to look at.
And lets not forget I still have a few B80 over here, waiting for a place to sing.

But, with the oval woofers, and the square mid tweet, I can predict nightmares just thinking of routing them in....

I sent a message to the company about availability, and will wait to hear from them.
