I don't believe a universal answer exists. It will depend on your system, taste, music. The PS caps are only a part of the whole.

Look at commercial stuff. Lots of people love Jadis and you can see the Philips caps proudly presented on the chassis. Having grown up with those caps i know their sound intimately, nice and musical, but nothing special as resolution, or frequency extension. Yet, it works for them.

I guess the question would be:

With Black Gates out of production and going for crazy money, what are currently available / sensibly priced options that measure and perform the closest to them for:

High voltage PS

Low Voltage PS

Coupling

Etc.

Also does anyone know who produces the Mundorf caps? Might be Rubycon for all we know... they seem to be filling the market hole Black Gates left.

Some people says Mundorfs are made from F&T also Germany manufacturer, but who knows.

About the polyprop tubecaps there is no doubt. Have a bunch of F&T Joule caps 20/750v and they sound pretty much identical. Look identical too.

As for other makes...have a few high voltage Rifa, hesitate to recommend them. Similarly with Felsic, but unlike the Rifa these have at least an excellent midrange. Also have some Kendeil which are just horrible.

Perhaps Siemens/Epcos/TDK are worth a try.

I’ve used Mlytic as PS on my SS amp, it does sound better then Elna for Audio & Samhwa caps that it replaced, smooth with no grain. A friend too mentioned that they could be rebranded F&T caps & Im thinking it is likely so. Now am collecting parts to build a tube amp, will order some F&T caps for testing.

Was it Rubycon who marketed the Black Gate ? From what I knew they were just doing Oem for whoever it was. Anyway from commercial point of view BG’s were a niche market product, just look at what it cost compared to other brands back in the day. If Audio Note are able to reproduced New BG’s , my guess it will be at least double the price of their Kasei range. Market has changed compared to bygone era, who knows Audio Note might make money out of it this time round.

Cheers

For LV I used Jensen 4 pole but I like more the BG and second Mundorf Mlytic AG+

For HV the best are BG, Elna Cerafine aren't bad but can't compare vs BG, still searching the substitute.

BG was developped by Jelmax for a non audio pourpose and manufactured by Rubycon.

Why not try some HV caps & bypass with Russian Ky40 caps Merlin ? You might get something similar. I played with the Ky40 & there’s some BG sound to it. Another option, is to look for low value BG like 10uf HV caps & parallel them with other caps. I bought a bunch of 250v 10uf caps from Micheal Percy, not sure if they still have stock.

Cheers
