samcklee i wanted the measurements of the heatsinks not the chasis.
it seems that the fins aren't very deep and the all the 377mm length is not used.

Hi Aradan, i brought some few chassis from breeze audio also and its really cheap and good. I used another chassis for my FO M and its great. Just cannot find a suitable one for FO L. I was hoping to find something like what LC is using with fin 70mm and higher fin density but like these china factory all make only up to 50mm fin height.
Hi back, there is no spec for the heatsink on the seller website. I did some rough measurement this morning, the heatsink size is 340 length,150 heigth. Fin is 40mm height and 8mm between fin. thickness of the heatsink base is 10mm. why all 377mm is not used u can see in my previous photo is because the FO-L module is only 160mm long and i have already tried to position the FO L in the center. LC did suggest to mount the module lower but then this chassis width does not allow as the hypex PSU is quite big.
for a temp solution I maybe trying to put a 12v low noise computer fan for the time being while looking for a better heatsink.
cheers

with these dimensions you have about 0.31-0.33 but you have a high room temperature so you need something like 0.25 or even lower.
the italian guy have bigger chassis and he sales and heatsinks only.
Hi-Fi 2000 contenitori per l'elettronica, case modding HTPC, Galaxy, rack, DIYaudio, computer cases, front panel express, knobs, milled Handles, milled fronts, hi-end,
you could use 4 of heatsinks 200x165x40 but you need to cut them a little and it is not very easy.
i have build active speakers and i use 3 F.O M per channel and even the heatsink is huge it still i not enough.
so what i have done is use pc fans 12cm 300rpm (no noise at all) and i have one of these
5 Pcs 50 Celsius NO Normal Open Temperature Switch Thermostat KSD-01F H50C | eBay
in series with the fan.
the fan kicks in after about 45 minutes lower the temp a little and the stopes again.
i am really happy with this solution and i can't say when it's working even with total silence.
you need put the sensor in a place where the fan hits or the temperature will go it too low
until the fan turn of but i am sure you can do it with your thermal camera.
i hope i helped

Do you have a picture? I am planning to use a couple of fans in my 6 channel case and had been considering a thermal control.
i don.t have the inside but you just wire it in series with the + of the fan
Nice cabinet finish!
It was more where you placed the temperature sensor itself, on the heatsink?
I'm using 165 Χ 40 Χ 300 (hifi2000) for 1.4M and one hypex 3K and temperature of the heatsink is 39 C. The hotter part is hypex transformer reaching 50 C
Dimensions don't always tell the story, hifi2000's fins are curved so they dissipate more heat
Your case is more likely suited M version rather the L one.

I just tested the FO 1.4M on my ATS-4 speakers as is, without adding extra capacitor bank and the bass is pretty weak... I will need to go the extra capacitance route! I was planning on buying 4x of the following caps since they have really good specs
Electronic Components and Parts Search | DigiKey Electronics
Price is a no brainer, ESR is really low and ripple is almost 11A. It should make a huge impact, at least that`s what I hope for.
Thanks

thanks pinnocchio.
it,s my design.
i am blown way by the audio technolgy midrange.
i would like a mini review for the 10 inch audio technolgy
when you finish with the amps.
maybe i use it sometime in the future.

That was exactly my conclusion after listening the first time to v1.4 in comparison to v1.3. V1.4 betters v1.3 in other aspects. I will try cap bank shortly.
Hi all,
Thanks for all your suggestion. I did an experiment using an low noise 120mm pc fan blowing at my heatsink about 2" away. The side with the fan drops to 41 degree compares to 54 on the side without fan. Seems like fan is the easy solution for FO L.
The fan is spec to 11dba which is super quiet and maybe I will run it lower voltage. I think switching the fan on and off there will be some back emf ripple effect on the supply so maybe I will just keep it on instead. Just turn the music little louder 😱)
The ATS is super nice and I dreaming of building one too.

you can increase bias a little more and you are ok.
mine was going 38C.
don't run it at lower voltage.
i tried that and it wasn't starting some times.
rpm is too low already i guess.

Let us both know your findings with the additional caps, that's interesting...
What amps are you comparing it with?
That is one small hurdle: we have no schematics and I personaly lack detailled (or independant) comparisons with given reference amps to know where these - probably very good- amps modules are exactly ranking. At what level are they playing? A usual modern 1kE amp? A North Class D amp? A Job 225? Or really somewhere high as an Accuphase 460 so they would be trully outstanding? How does the amp only section compare with the Accuphase and are they an improvement or not in some aeras when driving say a good wide range LS (25Hz closed box to 45kHz thanks to magnetostat), not too difficult to drive re power delivery (87dB)? Then I could have a hint if these are an improvement for me or not, well noting I really hope they are as I feel attracted by LC's work.
Meanwhile hoping one of my friend pulls the trigger (he starts nearly from scratch so any good amp is an improvement for him) so I can test them... Or someone reviews them in the meantime.
Thans again for sharing - I am sure that helps improving even further

i haven't heard these amps but it sure outperforms accuphase e202 bryston 4bst by a lot and hypex ncore 400 by a small margin except for the bass.

I was comparing First One v1.3 with v1.4. I've owned quite a few decent amps, nad m2, Marantz SM11s1, Musical Fidelity KW550, NCore400, LUA Alborada MK2, etc. Only the LUA Alborada mk2 I would like to swap for the FO, but I don't want tube power amps anymore. The FO 1.4 is really, really good and I don't even have the latest version with the FO L front end...

You find NC400 better in the bass? Is that with one Hypex SMPS600 per channel?

yes with one smps600 per channel
i had the f.o. 1.2 at the time and no cap banks

Thanks for the feedback
E 202 and the Bryston are indeed fine oldtimers, but, well, from another age sonicaly. Musicality can still be enjoyable, but today's amps are in another league IMHO. Thanks for the info, I am indeed seeking for a lot more.
Can't comment around the Ncore 400, but regarding nad m2, Marantz SM11s1, Musical Fidelity KW550, and LUA Alborada MK2 we have some references here.
The Lua is an excellent amp IMHO, so now we talk. Comparison is interresting as this one can be found at around 1.2kE. Of course used and you might need to service it etc., but it remains an excellent musical and transparent amp IMHO. The Marantz is also a very fine amp and that excellent bargain can be found for 800E used. Not tat I am after these used amps anyway, I would be more intersted by putting new amp modules in my own amp when needed, so more after evaluating the FO.
It is recomforting to read that the Lua and Marantz can be bettered by the FO as these 2 are really the starting point of the high league IMHO. Can't comment on the NAD, heard it separatly and was fine in the middle and treble but couldn't compare it directly to other amps. But Lua and Marantz comparison indicate that the FO modules are in a high league indeed, so encouraging as far as I am conerned as I wouldn't want less quality.
Thanks for sharing, that puts an idea on overall performance
