The Weather

Wet snow fell all day yesterday (0º) and has frozen overnight (-3º). This place is a mess. Took 5 minutes and 4 litres of hot water just to open the car door.

I think I see your problem. (If you don't know the joke for which that is the punch line you've missed a good one.)

I suggest you dry and wax the door frame and sealing gasket. Usually prevents the problem. Graphite in the locks is also useful.

Ed, it actually wasn't the seals, the melting snow bridged the gap and then froze. Yes, we use plumber's grease on the seals.

The door locks have never seen a key, it's remote entry. It was the handle itself that wouldn't open, again because of the re-frozen snow.

Just got back from dropping off the Mrs at the train and came home. It's definitely another day to be working from home.

Silicone spray will solve the doors freezing shut issue, and it won't hurt the paint or anything and works really well.. First make sure all door gaskets are dry and clean first, then apply and you're good to go. Here it can get really cold at times in the winter (-18C tonight they say), and so I've learned the hard way to leave one door unlocked most of the time whenever I can, and also carry a small bottle of lock de-icer with you when you leave your vehicle for awhile.. The lock de-icer isn't much use sitting in your glove box while you're out shopping etc, been there too! lol.

Nice conditions here, today. First we had a loong, cold spell, to really set the frost in the ground. Then we got 40cm snow in a night, then a quick thaw to set the snow. The snow clearing crews had their hands full, so in all the back streets and residential streets, the now wet snow was thoroughly stamped hard by cars, before getting to them. Then a little freeze, and now a thaw with a lot of rain turned everything to a lovely glaze...

I expect to wake up tomorrow to another minor snow storm. Black ice has been a problem here since the last storm yesterday morning, according to some my friends who live a bit further north (about 50km) the accidents were epic. One my friends slid into a curb and ruined a tire on the way to work yesterday morning.

We've had that where the compacted layer can only be removed in March when you get the sun higher on the horizon and a little warming. Maybe once every ten years.

It's 25 degrees F (-4C) right now. Our weather forecast has showed ZERO percent chance of precipitation all day and shows 0 for tomorrow. I guess this means that the white stuff falling from the sky isn't snow?????

Granted there hasn't been much but the front steps (wood) to the house are thinly covered. What had accumulated on the grass and asphalt is now gone.

Let 'mamselle drive through the bad stuff on I-80 in PA - and that is the urban assault vehicle getting 19.6 mpg

It only took a couple of accidents in the past 10 days for drivers to start heeding road conditions -- one in Western PA which had several trucks jack-knifed and cars stuck in the median -- between Dubois and Brookville if I recall correctly.

I-90 in Eastern OH was shut for about a day with a 55 car pileup.

So, yesterday Dec 9 when the trucks started their flashers and driving at 45mph, all the traffic slowed down. The patch of bad weather stretched from about Bellefonte to Milton.
