Building with the Soekris dam1121

It sounds like con speed. Default = 115k?

//

Yes, the PC and terminal are set to 115200. Can't vouch for the 1121 as I can't read its output :))) but that's why I tried setting the PC and terminal software(s) at different speeds.

If I try sending a command, like set volume or +++, there's no response so it looks like gibberish is being output to the 1121 as well.

Finally got around to trying the 1121. Straightforward setup as a basic stereo unit and playing fine.

However, I can't get the serial port to produce anything but gibberish.

I use HyperTerm as my default but also tried RealTerm and PuTTY - same result.

If I remove the 1121 and connect a 1021 all works as it should.

It seems to be connected properly as, on bootup, it outputs gibberish and if I change tracks more gibberish. I have tried with/without a ground wire, have tried all the Display options in RealTerm (ANSI, ASCII etc), tried the invert option in RealTerm, tried a different power supply on the 1121, tried different conspeeds on the terminal/PC.

Am I missing something here....

Remember, the dam1121 serial port is ttl level, the dam1021 have both ttl and rs232, where rs-232 beside voltage levels are inverted, need to match your interface cable....

I ment the 1021.

Yes, I own a balanced Rev4 build and have built several 1021's for friends. So yes, I have a basis for comparison. My system is differential from beginning to end. Yes, I do prefer balanced systems - seem quieter, 'blacker' in background - and yes, I agree they need to be fully balanced from beginning to end or you're wasting time/money.

The 1121 struck me as a smidgeon more detailed and a bit 'easier' out-of-the-box than a single-ended 1021 I had on hand. And I appreciate the freedom to try different power supplies, isolate or not isolate and I like the small size - not to be discounted for packaging.

Greetings Guys. I am planning to purchase a dam1121 in the near future and, whilst I followed the early development of the 1021 I'm conscious I have a lot of catching up to do.

Can I make a couple of shortcuts with your help please...

Are these what I require to 'communicate' with the dam1121?

USB Direct to Serial Cable TPL2303TA TTL RS232 Converter Arduino RPi Breadboard | eBay

Terminal Software

How is DSD handled by the DAM, is it converted to PCM in the FPGA?

I plan to use a Beaglebone Black running the botic kernel as the source of my BCLK, LRCLK and DATA inputs. I'll probably run the dam1121 outputs into a tube buffer.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Your USB to serial adapter looks OK for the 1121, since the latter has a TTL-level serial port.

Regarding the software, I don't know if Realterm is OK but I do know that ExtraPutty works.

Can I just check my understanding with respect to the strap configuration.

I plan to use a single dam1121 in simple L/R stereo, non-inverted mode. According to the manual that means I will run it in master mode.

For that configuration I make the following connections;

J2 pin4 - connect to ground via 5K resistor
J3 pin7 - connect to ground via 5K resistor
J3 pin9 - connect to ground via 5K resistor
J3 pin11 - connect to ground via 5K resistor

Sorry if this is basic stuff but there seemed a bit of confusion earlier in the thread and as the old adage says, "check twice, cut once".

Thanks

I used 6k resistors and mine don't initialise as hoped for. The boards are buried deep into a construction so I'm waiting to understand if its something else. Sören says he tested with 1k.

Config look ok to me for what you want. Connect both pin J2 P1 and P2 to VSS or it will not start.

Sören if you read this - what is fed by P1 resp. P2?

5K should be ok, if I remember correct I did verify the values.

Just different parts if the digital power, both need to be connected.
