Hello,
Did arrive home safely with the Aurender in my backpack on a bicycle.
The Aurender is one that has been used in the shop so does not need burn in.
My dddac has been switched on for a few months now but never with a signal coming from the usb entrance.
Now there ius a short usb cable from the circuit bouard to the neutrik usb chassis receptable and a few inches longer from that receptable to the Aurender. Was not possible to put the wave io closer to the chassis.
Is there some kind of burn in proces after which the sound will get better?
The inside usb cable is 20 or 30 centimeters . The outside one is 40 centimers. They are both the same '' brand '' . I did choose them because they were available in the right length. If i would go for an audiophile grade i would better just skip the neutrik receptable. It would not be very sensible to use '' high grade '' usb on the outside and continue with normal grade on the inside.
Just did listen to some ripped cd's. It surely '' swings '' more, makes you wanna tap your feet. Will it get better during break in of cables and wave io( which has its own proper power supply with choke input ( lundahl) and Belleson regulator with Black Gate caps?
Doede did tell me the sound can be '' tuned '' using a different usb cable. I will write him an email to ask for suggestions.
If the differences are big it would be usefull to skip the neutrik. Did use it mainly because i did not want a HEAVY chassis like mine with a cable dangling on the outside during transport. So will have to add a kind of strain relief and a way to attach the outside part of the cable to the chassis in such a way it would not be a danger during handling.
greetings, Eduard
Hi Eduard, a matter of trying, but we will take it on email.
To judge the Aurender better, you might want to connect a laptop or so with foobar and play some same tracks.
Also did you listen to 44.1 ripped music or also HD tracks.
Hello Doede and Simon and the others,
Simon maybe you are not that stupid but maybe you did not grow up reading books because you are still kind of young?
I wrote that i never used my dddac with signal coming from the USB entrance.
Doede, I just listen to my ripped cd so far. If i can get the same music with higher resolution i would be interested of course.
The Aurender i have got now is just to try, it has no internal HD and they told me the one with internal HD will give you some extras when using the Aurender app.
The price is rather high so is the price of the dddac the way i built it. I cannot compare it to more modest computer based systems. Anyone interested should just do like me go to a shop and try one at home. Someone at Audio Creative is using one, smoothdancer in Scandinavia, Doede in Germany and i am number 4. The reason i decided to give it a try was the fact Doede is using one and i was willing to spend the money if it is nice.
The usb cable ( 2 in fact) are probably very basic quality. They do what they must do. I think 99 % of the cables on the market will do.
Will ask Doede by mail to give me some potential candidates. Will swap the external 50 centimeter cable to find my favourite and in the end get one with about 70 cm length and skip the neutrik just to be sure!
Would be nice to have some cables to try, just swap them without wearing glasses so there will be no room for autosuggestion!
Maybe usb cable between Dddac and Aurender could be less critical because the power supply part of the cable isn't used or is it?

Good to hear your impressions on the Kali. I have the old RPI connected direct to a DDAC (no isolator or clock) so wondering if I can use the older RPI model to drive the Kali?
I use the kali as a hat on the rpi2 and I have no other isolation. So the system is NAS to rpi2 to kali to dddac by i2s. I have no experience with other rpi types.
Hi PZ1, What PSU are you using to power the RPI and Kali? The one recommended on Volumio site is 5V 3A. I doubt if they would ever draw 3A and I'm wondering if the DDDAC 5V supply would be OK, but it is only rated at 1A.
I have the urge to upgrade to the Tent Reg Dac boards .... So, how many Tent Dac boards can the main board drive, has anyone had more than 8 Dac boards running ?

Hello Alex,
I think the only issue will be the power supply if it cannot deliver the extra current asked by the shunts. The updated manual gives the load resistors for different number of boards up to eight.
Doede will tell you the next time he will log in here.
Greetings, Eduard
P.s there has been someone here ( maybe you) who did use a bigger number than 8 boards

Hi Eduard,
I have 15 Dac boards running with the non Tent version. So far I think someone has tried 8 Tent Dac boards, but I like to take things to the limit ... must be the motorsport side of me coming out 🙂.
The power supply will be no problem, I have 12v at 4.5A available.
Thanks,
Alex
Hello Alex, Take things to the limit ? Then you should buy high effiency loudspeakers. I see to many so called high end system using these little boxes. No matter how expensive they will always remain small.

I have de 5v 3A adapter (volumio website) on the Kali and the doede psu 5V on the rpi2. Till now I have not yet tried the other options, 🙂 will take some time before I willtest this.
Thanks for the information, I did not know it was possible to mount the Kali on the RPI and feed each with a separate supply 😉
Sad thing is that the Kali PSU does not have a UK adapter 🙁
I guess I could rip out the contents of the adapter and mount in the DDDAC enclosure and hard wire it to the IEC socket.

I am not sure what you mean about little boxes ... I guess you are referring to loudspeakers and what type I have.
I am a very satisfied owner of ATC 50ASL`s with the ATC built tweeter driven by ATC`s SCA2 preamp.
I have a dedicated and treated listening room so any modifications are easily noticed (some good, some bad 🙂 so I am keen to get the best out of what I have and if I can push through some barriers to achieve my goal, I will give it my best attempt.
A technical question for Doede regarding the IV resistors.
I understand that the IV resistors have a maximum value of 134 divide by how many dac boards used.
Will it still distort if the IV value is lower, i.e. 12 dac boards will need 11.16 OHM but would 10 OHM be OK but with a bit less output voltage ?
Many thanks
Alex.
Hello,
Yes this hobby like any other male hobby is mainly about see what i can do and you cannot do. In the past i knew a lot of conservatoire students and they were using a soundsystem which did cost less then my turntable at the time but they listened to music not to their set.
The audiophiles can read and write as much as they like on diy audio but as long as you dont know something about making music it is not the real deal.
greetings, Eduard
Now back to my Aurender so nice to use lol

I use 4 tent boards with 4 old boards. Those 8 with the blue motherboard draws 1.25 amps from the 12v FYI
Sounds amazing!

But if they are lower, you'll have a lower output power, but you won't have more distortion.

Tried it last night and no distortion. I needed 8.350R for the 16 dac boards but I had to go down to 14 boards where the IV resistors need to be 9.57R.
I am keen to keep my IV resistors as I had them made for me by Charcroft (VSR6 version).
An update on my 16 stack project.
I have had to reduce the stack down from 16 to 14 boards. It was running fine for a few weeks then I started to hear the odd click and pop when playing. Sometimes I would get a sound like a skipping CD or a loose SPDIF connection.
It seems that I was pushing the I2S connection length too much for 16 boards.
I will now see how many PBT boards can I get away with 🙂

I get the best SQ using direct out from the positive and negative. As I have a blocking capacitor in my pre and power amps there is no problem with DC offset. However, I do get a little hum with this arrangement. The two negatives are joined in the conventional way in the preamp, which uses an earth lift arrangement.
What earthing arrangements are others using with direct out from positive and negative?
Thanks
David
