Yes, there is! There is a perfect way to use a uA709. Wrap it gently in a few layers of aluminium kitchen foil, place on an anvil, hammer forcefully ten to fifteen times with a good hammer, place the now flattened foil package inside a sealed glass bottle to minimise escape of contaminants, and bury the whole thing gently in the nearest flower-bed. 😀
This method also works on uA741s, by the way. But at least they don't latch-up, and/or oscillate violently. So it's a bit of a shame to destroy a functioning uA741.

That rings a bell, can't say I've tried it with a 709 though.
1% metalfilm in '79 must have been expensive.
I recall Doug Sax using uA709's with followers on well regarded direct-to-disk recordings for Sheffield lab. I think the output devices were complementary.

afaik, the first opamp made commercially was the Philbrick-Nexus... two dual triodes.
