"The Wiener" TPA3118 amplifier, group buy #3 + "Wiener Pro" prototypes.

A stereo card is 20mm maximum component height (capacitors) + 1.6mm PCB thickness + 4mm of spacers between case and PCB = 26mm minimum internal height in the case. I'd go 30mm minimum. PBTL and Pro cards add 3mm to the height, due to the larger inductors, so 33mm minimum internal case height.

Stereo/PBTL cards are 50x100mm, Pro is 75x125mm. I'd leave 20mm of extra space on each end to make room for wiring, more if you're planning on putting a switch, LED or whatever on the case.

Hammond 1455K1601 would be a good stereo card case, 1455N1601 (tight) or 1455N2201 (lots of room) for a Pro, 1455Q1601 for a pair of PBTLs side by side.

When everything that's paid for is mailed out, I'll sell what's left.

Put a good few hours into it tonight. Got a Pro resurrected, five stereo cards tested, and SMT done on eight PBTL cards.

I also turned my house pretty much upside down trying to find the screws/nuts/washers for the mounting kits. I've got 4 (?) orders ready to mail out that just need those. Of course I know if I go to Fastenal and get more of them, I'll find the original ones immediately 😉

Your baked goods looks absolutely mouth watering. I can't wait.🙂

Hi Gmarsh,

The Stereo and PBTL boards arrived safely, thank you.
Now it's time to start ordering parts to have my winter project ready when the winter comes..
I have not found the BOM's in this thread, can you tell me where to find them?

Attached the Wiener stereo/PBTL manual, which has the BOMs in text form.

PM me your e-mail address, I'll send you the BOMs on the Mouser site. You can get everything from there except the Coilcraft inductors for the PBTL/Pro parts (has to come from Coilcraft) or the thermal pad (has to come from Digikey).

Put a few more hours in. Got the eight PBTL cards from earlier built. Four 8 ohm cards tested and working, and four 4 ohm cards built but not tested yet. And I found the mounting kit hardware!

Had youtube autoplay going while building these up, and discovered these guys - Brown Sabbath, a jazz/latin fusion band covering Black Sabbath. Starts off slow but hang in there 'till the guitarist gets going past the 4:00 mark.

Their live cover of NIB on the KEXP sessions is also pretty amazing. Sabbath with a horn section doesn't sound right but believe me, it does...

wushuliu,

What are your settings for switching frequency, gain and master/slave for each board? I reported that I dialed the gain down to 20dB, but then I switched it back to 26dB several days ago as I think the sound is more to my liking at the higher gain after more extensive listening.

Whoops I said I use BD Mode, I meant 1SPW. I haven't tried out the TPA3100D in years. Hmm...

Are you using an RC filter on your transformers? I think there was mention of it way back and I know some makers recommend it and some don't.

I use BD mode. Reading the TPA31xx datasheet, this is what TI has to say about 1SPW mode:

7.3.12.2 MODSEL = HIGH: 1SPW-modulation

The 1SPW mode alters the normal modulation scheme in order to achieve higher efficiency with a slight penalty in THD degradation and more attention required in the output filter selection. In 1SPW mode the outputs operate at ~15% modulation during idle conditions. When an audio signal is applied one output will decrease and one will increase. The decreasing output signal will quickly rail to GND at which point all the audio modulation takes place through the rising output. The result is that only one output is switching during a majority of the audio cycle. Efficiency is improved in this mode due to the reduction of switching losses. The THD penalty in 1SPW mode is minimized by the high performance feedback loop. The resulting audio signal at each half output has a discontinuity each time the output rails to GND. This can cause ringing in the audio reconstruction filter unless
care is taken in the selection of the filter components and type of filter used.

I am not using an RC filter with either the CineMag transformers in my Weiner stereo amp, or with the Altec/Peerless transformers in the Weiner PBTL (dual mono) amp. I believe Jensen and Lundahl have recommended RC filters, but I haven't had a need for them.

I just finished updating my McIntosh MC240 tube amp power and bias supply circuits, and this amp sounds incredible with my system. It is definitely the best amp in my collection. The other day, I switched back to the Weiner PBTL amp, and I have to say for an amp that cost about 1/10 of what I paid for the Mac and new capacitors, it is not far behind. Right now, I have the amp modules running in BD mode with a switching frequency of 1.2MHz and 20dB gain. My wife listened with me and she commented that the Weiner was right up there with the Mac. I would say the differences were in slight losses of articulation, soundstage depth and presence -- we're talking subtle differences. Both amps have a warm tone and holographic imaging with my Klipsch Forte II speakers.

I am really curious if anything is gained with going with a more powerful amp like the Weiner Pro considering my speakers are 98dB sensitive.

Oh god! Stop tempting me, still waiting for my boards.😀

I just got a Altec 15335A on hand, I could tested it with a scope and report back on the snubber values for that tranny. I have found that all my audio transformer rings and a snubber will reduce it drastically. The snubber value also varies quite a bit for different transformers.

As for articulation, soundstage depth and presence, I have found that by adding a decent tube preamp improves all of that. I recently got a cheap tube preamp (Little Bear P3 with SRPP tube circuit, I did a number of modding), and it really improve in that area you described, esp presence.

gmarsh,

Thanks for the exposure to Brown Sabbath. Having grown up with Black Sabbath and being a jazz enthusiast, this formula actually works quite well. Good stuff!
