"The Wiener" TPA3118 amplifier, group buy #3 + "Wiener Pro" prototypes.

$20 is bare PCB and a preprogrammed microcontroller in a static bag. You'll have to buy the other parts and install them yourself - all parts except the inductors are available from Mouser, the inductors have to be purchased directly from Coilcraft.

Thanks
Will you consider providing pbtl version of 3250 using the same PCB but without all the parts like the coilcraft soldered as the stereo version? As I am thinking to build pbtl 3250 and if the cost for such assembled version is affordable to me, I may order two assembled pieces instead of a bare board.

Thanks

Made some changes to the board to facilitate PBTL operation.

- Short the L+/L- output terminals together, this becomes +.
- Short the R+/R- output terminals together, this becomes - (I think, polarity in PBTL mode isn't clear in the datasheet)
- Remove 2 caps, add two wire links to short the TPA inputs to ground.
- Jumper two locations on the TPI header.
- Left audio input now becomes the main audio input.

At this point I really gotta stop making changes to the thing or it's never getting out 🙂

Go for graphite-foil at 6.9mills like "WLFG S 900 K". (Of course, not isolated)
I need something thick (3mm or more) to clear the component leads on the through hole parts. And it has to be insulating, there's bottom side traces/vias in the area that a conducting thermal pad could short.

The 20x20cm, 4mm thick H48-6G pad from digikey is pretty much the best thing found so far. I don't want to get into buying >$100 sheets of things and cutting them up.

Hi gmarsh and all

Might as well sign myself up, to go along with my TI class "D" amp collection and test it out.
I am fine with you taking as long as necessary to incorporate changes and get the Wiener Pro barnacle free first time around.
You have been at it for months now, as it is 🙂

Got the costing done. Going to update the first post in a moment with paypal information, updated schematics and things.

Classic Wieners:

Bare PCB and programmed microcontroller: $12.50 CAD.
Add soldered on TPA3118 chip: $15 CAD for total $27.50 CAD.

Fully assembled/tested stereo card: $100 CAD
Fully assembled/tested PBTL card: $105 CAD.
Filter kits: $18 for stereo card, $25 for PBTL card.

Wiener Pro:

Bare PCB and programmed microcontroller: $20 CAD.
Fully assembled/tested board: $185 CAD.
Filter kit (additional components to reconfigure output to 4/6/8 ohms) = $45 CAD. Inductors alone cost me $35 CAD to my door.

Mounting kit (for classic and pro Wieners): $12 CAD.

All costs are calculated based on an assembly quantity of 25 of each board type. From the sounds of it (thanks so much, ChuckT!) that might not be an issue 🙂

And I must repeat my warning: the Pro is a prototype. If all goes well the first crack at the hardware will work great, but there's a chance that boards may be shipped with wire bodges done, or may be delayed due to different parts/PCBs/whatever having to be ordered.

Dear gmarsh,

There are 3 transformers input indicated on the graphic of #1 about the details of 32250.
are 2 transformers inputs for PBTL and 1 for stereo?
and will there a menu provided?
Thanks

Hi
Downloaded PayPal.. and ready to chip in. Some new Q's though:

1. According to TIs site: "An LC filter is critical in helping you reduce electromagnetic radiation (EMI) of Class-D amplifiers. In some
Class-D amplifiers, you also need the LC filter to ensure high efficiency outputs"
'Critical' sounds dramatic..as if filters more or less is mandatory. Is it in your opinion?

2. Post and packaging.. have I just missed a post.. or how is it handled? Shall i pay in advance.. and how much for 1 or 2 assembled boards to Sweden?

BR
Anders

So is it possible to provide a pair of 3250 pbtl assembled? And how much is it?
Thanks
Standard rate ($185 CAD) for a Wiener Pro converted into PBTL mode. Converting this board back into stereo operation would be a straightforward job - remove the PBTL mode jumpers and install two provided capacitors. $370 for two cards, $388 CAD shipped.

$175 CAD for a "permanently PBTL" board. None of the parts on the unused audio input are populated. $350 for two cards, $368 CAD shipped.

Hi, here is my finalize GB
