What I am taking to LSAF

I experience live sound all over NYC out on the street, in Penn Statiion and in the subway stations. When building speakers I think back to how the sax/trumpet/drums/guitar/violin sounded live compared to what's happening in my home. Live sound has dynamics that are difficult to recreate. I never hear really deep bass - that seems to be a phenomenon enjoyed at home - but the unlimited dynamics and immediacy in the midrange and shimmery extension of cymbals can't be matched. My teenage boys play guitar while I slap a cajon. Putting on the stereo after jamming shows how far off we are when reproducing music. Regardless, some systems do a nice job of creating the illusion which suspends belief... Until we hear live music again.

I think we adjust as our ears adjust allowing us to hear what sounds 'right' until our hearing degrades too much.

Through college I played flute in full orchestras. Worse seat in the house. After that I played the occasional solo on flute and recorder in churches. I now play recorder in a small consort from time to time. This is the sound I voice my speakers for. The last concert I attended was at Robinson Hall in Little Rock. The Hovhaness "Magic Mountain" was the featured work.

Cool. I love the sound of recorders, especially the lower range ones (C, low F, G). Before speakers, my hobby was designing flutes and recorders (via computer models) and making them, and also playing them a little. My favorite is a hybrid recorder/shakuhachi...

I should have made them out of foam core...;)

Bob,
Slightly off topic, what are using for source(s) and amplification?

Back on topic, are you bringing any other speakers?

Looking forward to hearing your set up. LSAF is a great place to hear the stuff I read about on diyaudio.

Source is a laptop.

DSP is nanoDIGI

Tops powered by Yuan Jing TDA3116D2
Bottoms powered by SMSL 98E

I was going to get a second SMSL 98E but I waited too long and can't get one before Apr 29. I thought matched everything would look nice. There isn't a dime's difference between the two amps as far as SQ, but SMSL has mor power.

I will bring a small TL using the Alpair A7.3.

Bob - if/when you're thinking about adding to your stable of small amps, you might want to consider TDA7294. I ordered one of the assembled units from YJ a couple of months ago for background music in a small restaurant, and quite like it. It certainly "feels" like more power and "low end torque" than the 3116, for lack of a better description.

Caveat - I did have some issues with the remote selector/tone control board locking up, and found YJ's after sales customer service less than ideal, but after several email exchanges and receiving a new remote transmitter, all is good. What wasn't so delightful was the unfavorable CDN vs USD currency exchange, but that's not the vendor's fault.

Less that a week until LSAF. Y'all come down to Dallas Apr 30-May 1.

My Audax/SS speakers have just completed a 100hr burn-in and are sounding quite nice.

I had a pair of P7's in the test mule that became the T7-A7 TL. With a bit of time on my hands, I decided to make them presentable and bring them to LSAF. I built up one side where the panel was a wee bit short of flush and slapped some Bondo in a router accident. Then I went looking through the scraps of veneer left over from other projects. Ah ha! I have enough kewazinga to cover these little guys. $45 drivers, $250 a sheet veneer. Perfect match.

I haven't got a picture of the little TL's since they just got their first coat of tung oil varnish this afternoon. First picture is the Audax/SS MLTL's and the second is the production T7-A7 with A7.3's, both in walnut.

Bob, I hope you separated and protected the SS from the Audax inside that cabinet or you may blow out the SS. Wouldn't want you to make such a mistake at the show.
:headshot:

The SS's are in 4"x12" PVC pipes. Once enough stuffing is added to smooth out the resonances, it doesn't matter if the pipe is open or closed. Mine are closed. Next time out, I will use a simple sealed box behind a mid-tweet.

The little guys are out of the paint shop. The veneer was sold as kewazinga, but that is by definition rotary cut babinga. However, the veneer appears to be plain cut. Anyway....

Driver is the MA P7. My initial impression of the P7 is that it has a bit less character than the A7.3. Not necessarily a bad thing. I will need to do some A/B comparisons to come up with a genuine opinion.
