First One - mosFET amplifier module

Quote : According to the latest news First One won the OEM competition amongst others very competent amp modules, which is great.

Interesting, please tell us more :)

Could not reveal OEM customer at the moment. If they'll ever note the modules inside their active speakers then the link will be of course presented, but I can assure my statement is truthful.

Hi guys,
I m done with the power up sequence and some heating :)
well with hype 62Volt, the 2U heatsink x 300m rise to 57°C ...

I ve played with some fft and the PSRR and the hyper together gives a pretty nice graph. But could you just confirm that this graph looks ok from your experience ? (0db is 4.5V out put of amp) which gives roughly a 300uV for 50hz.
If you confirm then all is fine.
Thanks in advance

hi guys sorry to bother you with this, originally I just wanted to get an acknowledgment about the figures which I got by a first bunch of mesure to make sure that the cabling doesn't destroy some standard figures.

After the night, and some tuning of the bench (earth and 0V signal to earth, it appears that the graph posted above (can't delete it) is not representative for the 50hz and 150hz as they are also present even if I remove the +-64V faston :cheeky: also the graph shows rays at 2k and 3k and they do come from the measurement device (a bit old EMU0404) so dont mind

ok, so at the moment, I figure out that the 100hz and 200hz ray coming from the SMPS is rejected by the FO to a point where I still get it at the output for less than 125uV (-91db on a new graph). so this looks fine for me to move forward with the next step here which is to post some listening impressions :)
(That said I m still gona verify the Hypex ripple perf later on as we have many other providers here like cresnet, AP, coldamp and so forth )
cheers

Hi there,
here we go, FO 1.4 is in situ in the living room and connected (biwiring) to a pair of great (but not officialy in the "hifi" range) JBL LS80 (3.5 way with 2 x8") for 3 hours ago now

what to say ... despite the nice spring wether outside, I m just stuck in the sofa. you know this feeling if you do DIY for some year : one day you plug a new component and all of the sudent, it rocks ! you cant stop putting all your CDs and you feet seems to have a direct cabling with the woofer . you see what I mean.

Well the firstone experience is even beter than that. in addition to that your body feel very proud and you smile for some minutes with a feeling of "yeess, I got it".

Yeah the firstone is just amaizing. Deep and very clear bass, no any noise whatsoever, so clear but not bright. very very good. you feel that music is just natural as it should be.

So good I m now hesitating to build a second one for biamping, as this is already amaizing good in stereo with a single hypex ! the only drawback of my config (2Ux300mm) is that temperature stabilize at 57°C and rises to 59°C at relatively loud level...

Thanks LC for sharing with us a great invention. the FO worth every penny

Hi aradan

Any PSU will do as long as it's capable to deliver power needed. Classic PSU has 100-120 Hz ripple so sum capacitance should be 10 mF per rail, sum resistance up to 0,5 Ohm per rail, transformer 300-400 VA per channel.

Depend on parts used this type of PSU can be very expensive, much more than adequate SMPS.

Regards, L.C.

Thanks for very appealing sound report, I'm really glad you've enjoyed so much in FO's musical company.
I'm sure your decision to build second amp to have bi-amping is firm and just a question of time, no second thoughts here. My experience according to B&W 802 D3 together with FO bi-amping is great, even more relaxed sound with enormous dynamics, just love it, you'll love it too.

HI! I am still debating getting the FO. I have managed to find a chap who can possibly build it for me. However, I would like to be able to fit them in this chassis New black S2207 Aluminum enclosure/DAC case/amplifier chassis DIY BOX | eBay. It is 215mm x 228mm x 70mm. For various reasons, I would like a half-width chassis. I guess it will have to be a 2 chassis build - either monoblocks or power in one chassis and stereo FOs in the other. Unfortunately, they do not do a similar chassis in 215mm. I think the one maxidcx has used is 212mm? I will be grateful if he could confirm and refute whether his is 215mm or not. My concern is the heatsink - I will not be able to fit a 300mm heatsink, I don't mind a big, fat and ugly heatsink at the back of the chassis. Is this doable? Thanks.

Hi
Smoothquark, the choice for enclosure is a nightmare as long as you try to make it smaller and nice. The decision to go with 2 monoblock, is great but will increase the cost. The very minimum for such a project would be this case which is a new version half size of the usual "dissipante" model, you can find it here for example:
Hifi 2000 Botier avec Dissipateur 2U 300mm Faade 10mm Noire - Audiophonics

it is 240mm large and then 150mm internal.
you can mount the SMPS on one heatsink, say right, and the FO on the other heatsink, say left :trapper:.
with such a configuration and an SMPS1200A400 (62V) you ll get a temperature of around 52-55°C depending on the overall conduction between the 2 heatsink.

My choice was to put 2 FO in the box, and the SMPS located on the front panel. But the SMPS is 165mm large so you have to make your own custom encloseure which is not a problem : I bought the same front panel 240mm wide here:
hifi 2000 - facade aluminium 10mm noire pour gx283-287-288
and 2 standard heatsink 2Ux300m which you just have to drill properly so they can be mounted together on the front panel at 90°.

Then you ll have to find a later solution for the lower, upper and rear panel, but you can make you personal touch with some nice wood for example. good luck, But do not underestimate the size of the heatsink, or lower down the SMPS for a 1200A180...

Hi, I greet all,
I would like also add to the lucky owners of this great amplifier.
I finished building my FO 1.4. I used all-aluminum chassis 2U 300mm, that it fits perfectly.
The temperature on the radiator near the FO module ranges from 40 to 45 ° C, it is great.

Two SMPS power supply (+/-55V) are from Cresnet (thanks Sami).

Everything works perfectly. Now I just listen to music and I'm happy :happy1:

Now before me I have no speakers, but singers and instruments :)

Thanks LC :worship:
