Is it possible that the rebuild is too modern for the way XP expects to see the mechanical set up?
Or that the 4GB memory is too big for XP or some other XP incompatibility between XP and Win7?
These two HDD are the 750GB that were never used.
One got used to try to double install Win7.
The other one in it's antistatic wrapping is still unused.

I'm running short on time today...
Thinking aloud,
Could you install XP on the/or a drive that is compatible, make an image of the validated XP install and move it somewhere safe (an external drive) and then fit the new drive, this time using and running the backup program from a bootable CD or stick to restore XP onto the new blank drive fitted to the PC.

Andrew, can you let me know which HDD it is that you are trying to install XP on? Exact information mentioned on the HDD label please.
Also let me know if you get this message at the bottom of the screen during the installation process - "Press F6 if you have to install a third-party SCSI or RAID driver."
The spare one has the following:
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10
750Gbyte
S/N: 5QD4GWHV
ST3750840AS
P/N: 98J138 - 500
Firmware: 3.AAC

I THINK that XP does not have the SATA controller driver in the installation CD and hence the error.
I also think if you hit F6 during the installation process it will look for a driver on the FLOPPY drive - can you try that out [hitting F6 when it asks you to] and see what it asks for?
Another option that MAY work is to identify the SATA controller, slipstream XP to include the driver for this controller and install via the slipstreamed disk.

I don't have a floppy drive with a sata connection. They are all far too old.
Did the CPU-Z report confirm the HDD controller?

OK, I found this and this may be worth trying:
It seems it may work if we turn your SATA disk controller into ATA compatible mode.
Go into your BIOS. In the Advanced section there MAY be an entry "SATA Controller" with it being enabled. Disable it. This turns it into IDE mode. Save settings.
Try installing XP now.

I found CSM: enabled
in Boot/CSM (Compatibility Support Module)
What is that?
I have not changed it.

Found it in Advanced\Storage Configuration
SATA controller(s): already set to Enabled
Changed SATA mode to IDE (three options IDE, RAID, AHCI where it was set).
SATA IDE combined mode is still set to Enabled
Hard Disk S.M.A.R.T. is set to disabled.
Save and exit.
Install is starting.
Deleted all the old partitions from Win7
created a new 20480MB partition (hopefully that will be 20GB)
selected format partition.
Copying files nearly complete
OK so far.

For installing XP on a newer computer, you'd probably want begin by going into the computer's BIOS screen and adjust your SATA controller to perform IDE emulation.
I don't think it's that CSM thing.
Look for "SATA controller" or "SATA support" or SATA something which is enabled.
Edit: Looks like you found it 🙂

Do I create a new partition of say 200GB where I can download, save and install other non MS programs and apps?
and install MS apps in the 20GB C: drive?
That would leave me 400GB for other partitions

I have no idea what you agreed upon doing with the partition stuff in consultation with Mooly. Sorry - can't help you there.
Windows screen is up and second part is installing.
Says it will take ~39minutes !
Another STOP
could the 20GB partition be too small for the first install? The minimum offered stated 0MB

Repair or fresh install?
No, it's not the partition. See this - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/314063
Go to the section - "Error occurs during the installation of Windows XP". There are 2 methods to try to fix this error. Please try them one after another. The second method involves going into the BIOS and turning off features. Before you turn off any settings - please note down what they were originally set at before you turn them off.
