I am about 30 miles from Atlanta in the country . We have black bears ,brown bear and wife has seen the eastern cougar in the area ( thought to be gone from the area for about 110 years) . In eastern Kentucky the brought back elk from out west . The elk because of size go thru fences not over them like the deer do a big problem .

What about art?

Can people do these things for the sake of it, for the conceptual art of it without derision from technical people on diyaudio.com?

All they need to do is admit they have no clue as to whether it will change sound, admit the mere possibility the sound difference is a placebo effect and own their actions for what they are; aesthetic choice, cultural rituals, superstition etc - all of which make them feel good.

Then people would leave them alone!

I mean, do we tell monks, for example, that their rituals, beliefs and ways of doing things are a load of rubbish? No that would be disrespectful and arrogant.

I think we should all see these audiophile rituals and beliefs in the same way and as tourists we should occasionally take on those rituals as part of a rich, worldly experience.

Not a problem for the elk - they are smashing down barriers, making new ground.

Humans are funny things, trying to imprison themselves with fences and the like, absract country borders etc.

Sure, Let me direct you at Q-audio, previously what Kept SE busy. Shop ? Q CABLES . Hand made cables, that do what they say on the tin (light, low microphony). No snake oil claims. Not best buy prices, but you are getting value for money in terms of materials and time required to make.

Bingo. Steve is ethical, makes no unsubstantiated claims. Whether the art is worth it to you is a separate decision, but he doesn't toss ignorant pseudo-technical cowchips at the suckers.

A 'jr. collegue'* of my g/f had to appear before the medical (review) board tuesday last.
She's accused of advising (chronic pain) patients, referred officially to her, to buy I-Ching cards at $200 the pop.
The lady even added that a patient who doesn't want to play card games, does not have sufficient self-interest.
Madame Ng makes a minimum salary of $150k+, without breaking a sweat.

Monks are free to do as they very well please, provided they're not running a racket business.
Any Monk that pulls Monkey $-stunts on one of my family members, will not merely be paid a visit, but even his ancestors will be dug up for some party time.

(* details on how-the-F someone like that was offered a full-time position 6.5 years ago, in spite of a negative advice, by PM only)

You can blame the influence of Fr Richard Wilhelm for that, who, when supposed to be a missionary in China, translated the i-Ching into German!! And to blame van der Post for his rather odd views on such matters would also be reasonable, though neither gent was known to sell such material as even placebo medical treatment!

Send me a PM when you have your party time with the relatives!

Now that's over the top, I can't imagine something quite that extreme happening here except for someone doing an independent scam. Here at a major institution you are more likely to have anything remotely alternative thoroughly trashed. What exactly were they supposed to do with the cards to treat pain? Sorry but when mad I imagine you as Capt. Pissgums.

All things relative.

The maritime branch organisations here frequently have presentation evenings on various topics ( KNVTS www.kivi.nl )
During my university years I attended a number of such events, hosted at the Rotterdam world trade center, on a 50-buck jr. membership card.
Topics as e.g. the lifting of the Herald of Free Enterprise ro-ro ferry, a presentation held by the on-site salvage head.
During the 6 months of the '90-'91 Desert Storm period, Dutch salvage companies were the only willing to take on clean-up contracts in the Persian Gulf, at a very steep bonus. Several presentations held at the WTC.

For someone who'd been collecting Checkered Demon and Crumb comic books since age 12, the rows of gloating CEO's and managers in tie & blazer somewhat had the appearance of Germanic tribesmen back at the club house, overly-pleased with the golden kill, while they suck the last meat off a bone.

(when the contract for the Costa Concordia job didn't go to Dutch salvage companies, same gloating level after the total cost went across a billion)

I ask if it's entirely an internal desire to believe in some some magical spiritual hogwash, or, is it a learned response to all the dubious white papers and offical reports they've been subjected to over the years?

It's a full time job descerning what's real and what's not. Just because it's peer reviewed and came from XX PhD at Big Audio Corp doesn't mean its accurate or unbiased.

Thank you for the very kind words, guys!
