My experience is just longer than yours. You made the misassumption that the 741 came out in 1970. I had been using them for 1 year already.

Out of sixth form at 16. BSEE course work done in 3 1/2. Draft number 35. Bit of trivia my left leg is my only major body part still all OEM. Repairs work just fine.

How expensive is a mask set for a 1" wafer? Can a 1" process hold resolution near current stuff?
I don't think any auxiliary equipment has been made for 1" wafers that is even remotely SOTA. 18" mask sets are at a million plus.
Still 100% OEM, knee just healed 100% from a mis-step off of a curb. Never been cut open for any reason, never a single broken bone, picked up a little nerve trauma in the right index finger with some careless stretching exercises without warmup.
Can confirm. The early MOS/LSI guys used 2 inch wafers in 1969 and 1970. Here's a two inch wafer of Mostek MK2101s; I'm pretty sure it's a 256x4 static RAM. Bob Proebsting, one of the founders of Mostek, gave me the wafer. Next to it is a US $0.25 coin for scale. The coin was minted in Y2014 and is a commemorative "Colorado Quarter".

Knees are really important. Lose the ability to walk well and the rest really falls apart.
Been through flood and earthquakes. No fire yet... Cut up a bit but never stabbed, shot by a hunter on posted land out of season but enough distance that shot was minor. Been hunted at least once. (No, not gone hunting.)

Yes, I remember to had listened to radio with a crystal in college, in the middle 50...
There were too a technology with potatoes, if I remember well, but it was pretty tricky.
