That's a fancy I2S comm protocol amp with DSP - what makes you think this is what they are using? The existence of the xtal osc?
See if you can find a high res monitor you can flip the no audiophile picture of pcb 180 degrees and you will see STA 350BW on the chip.
Oh just found this: (Once you know what to google LOL)

Irrebeo,
Thanks for finding that link. Wow this thing is really impressive for a budget speaker. It is all digital inside and hence that is how they do EQ and XO in one. I had the same idea of high passing the LSR305 and adding a dedicated woofer a la "FAST" and getting a nice 3-way with the LSR305 handling the XO between the 5in mid and 1in tweeter.
I tried and it is still too blurry to make out - could be a TDA7492 given what I see but as the article above describes it, I will believe that it is the 350BW.
I have a set ordered and on the way...

The JBL is digital inside. Internally a Cirrus Logic CS5341 Multi-Bit Audio A/D Converter feeds the signal into a ST STA350BW (digital crossover/filter/PWM output) and makes a pretty clever design with good control abilities over the drivers. From a "design/involved components" to "outcome/sound" ratio it is probably the best a company could come up with in a budget speaker.

Maybe videocard is also part of what you see, don't really know, laptop used here was 3 times largest MBP price.
The speakers I looked at some time ago, they are interesting, advanced active miniature Econowave for real low price for offered tech.

Just bought the little Vifa/Tymphany driver. My first impression is that it's physically very light and small. Can't imagine getting much sound from it.
I'm going to set it up on an open baffle and compare it to the Eminence 12lta and Tangband 1808 I have on hand. H-frames will provide bass.
I'm actually psyched to hear it! Haven't heard a driver that measures flat in years.

Hi Godzilla,
Great that you now hold in your hands, one of the finest drivers made. No kidding around - it may be cheap, but there is no correlation of sound quality with price. It is only an 85dB sensitive driver - so not loud, but it is very smooth and clean. The impulse response can't be beat (no ringing). About the only drivers that may be better are the TG9FD (fiberglass cone) and the ScanSpeak 10F family which is substantially more expensive.
A few threads you might want to check out regarding the TC9FD in an OB:

http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/multi-way/252593-novel-open-baffle-construction-techniques.html
If using the TC9FD in an approximate 12in wide baffle, I think a 350Hz XO is about right. What you will notice with this little guy vs the larger full ranges you have: the polar dispersion will be wider and more uniform, you may feel that the impact or punch (150Hz to 200Hz) may be missing but if you XO at 350Hz, that should come from your woofers.
Have fun!

Thanks for the links xrk! All of the drivers will be mounted on 18" x 18" baffles so I expect them to reach approx 250Hz.
I'm already having fun just holding it in my hands!

Can't say I've had that problem 😀

That Fast, fun, Inexpensive OB project should cover a lot of ground comparable with your project at hand...

I tabulated the letter ID, model, votes, and ranking. With TapaTalk (smartphone forum reading app) it's hard to jump back and forth to cross-reference all the information.
X's graphs are posted on page 17 / post #161.
Random thoughts, in no particular order:
I liked different drivers for each clip, in particular:
AC/DC - G/A7.3
NJ - D/TG9FD10-8
Jazz - C/FF105WK
I ultimately voted for D, since it was 1st in one clip, and came in 2nd for the other two clips.
I wonder if there is a "familiarity bias" at play? I do most of my serious listening on Mark Audio Alpair 7.3-based speakers. (Note: I did not use these for this exercise, I used headphones.) I got the A7.3 speakers without any kind of auditioning or listening comparisons, basically based on generally good subjective feedback on various audio forums. But I do really like them. I don't have enough experience to say if they are the end-all, be-all, but for now I get enough enjoyment out of them.
I'd be curious to see the frequency response of every voter's ears along side their vote. Obviously, that's easier said than done! But I've seen several people comment (in general, not just this thread) that the can't hear above some frequency (usually due to age). To me, all the speakers (according to X's graphs), except A/P830986 and G/A7.3, are quite rolled-off at the highest frequencies. That could factor in to what people perceive as pleasing or not. Also, with regards to the highest frequencies, A/P830986 looks kind of wacky, as it dips then spikes.
I spent the most time with the AC/DC track, since I'm most familiar with it, and also am an electric guitarist who at one point obsessed over guitar amp tone. I actually took some brief notes on some of the drivers. Here's the notes from the first-round tournament-style elimination:
Good times, thanks again X!
Code:
ID ... MODEL ................... VOTES ... PCT ... RANK
A ... Peerless P830986 ........ 10 ...... 20% ... 2
B ... Tang Band W4-1320SB ..... 5 ...... 10% ... 4 (tie)
C ... Fostex FF105WK .......... 3 ...... 6% ... 5
D ... Vifa TG9FD10-8 .......... 7 ...... 14% ... 3 (tie)
E ... ScanSpeak 10F/8424G00 ... 13 ...... 26% ... 1
F ... AHE 3in ................. 5 ...... 10% ... 4 (tie)
G ... Mark Audio Alpair 7.3 ... 7 ...... 14% ... 3 (tie)
H ... Dayton Audio PA130-8 .... 0 ...... 0% ... 6

- B/W4-1320SB versus C/FF105WK:
B: highs muffled (consistent with its FR graph), better bass, tube sound lost
C: better balance - A/P830986 versus G/A.73:
A: highs muffled (consistent with FR graph, assuming I can't hear above 17khz-ish)
G: crunchier, more air, drums way better - D/TG9FD10-8 versus F/AHE: tough call
- E/10F/8424G00 versus H/PA130-8:
H: nasal, smeared
Good times, thanks again X!
Sounds awesome! Not throwing away the TB Bamboo since it had a more mellow and fuller sound. Surprised how well this little driver blended with the H-frames.
I think the secret weapon is the paper plate. 🙂
Adding a fork vertically in front of the driver will help vertical dispersion of the high frequencies

Yes, the plate acts as a waveguide. The waxy surface on the plate improves DDR. I'll try the fork tomorrow.
I'm with my two teenage boys this weekend and we all wanted to hear the driver - among others. We had a lot of fun swapping drivers in and out and listening to music. Good thing I had the plate because the day before I threw out all scraps of cardboard.

I love it. Food for the ears. 🙂
I am getting more requests for additional blind tests with diyAudio members out there willing to provide me the elusive Visaton B80 and the MA A7P.
I am thinking of a round 3 where top 2 from prior rounds plus the 2 new drivers can go head to head again.
Another option is a blind test between the TC9FD, TG9FD, and 10F/8424 all tested using my new 10F/RS225 FAST speaker with a 350Hz acoustic XO. That speaker is one of the best I have made and might just be the appropriate test rig for a driver that has same bolt hole and cutout as Vifa/SS 3.5in class frames.
