100nF on redboard is like 35mm away from tpachip, even past electrolytics on red ampboard left side, putting them near on on tpachippins should/could give a result audible 🙂
May be the experts should really run some real "experiments" and use the data obtained to demonstrate or support the theoretical predictions. Theories, simulations, calculations, results and observations generated from past experience are all good tools. However, only real experimental data generated properly are valuable for any specific situations.
Regards,
I bought this 2.1 board for my wife's office:
12V 50WX2 100W TPA3116D2 2 1 HiFi Digital Subwoofer Amplifier Verst Board | eBay
I mated it with a pair of Vifa TC9FD speakers in a sealed cylinder and an old 8" Polk sub whose plate amp burned out (so now a passive sub). Though the board has some hissing issues that I have been trying to eliminate, it's dead quite with the volume set to maximum, which is not a problem since my wife wants to use the computer's volume control. Anyway, I was shocked, just shocked, at how good this system sounds. It is much better than my YJ red board with Oscon caps but not as good as my Danzz board with snubber mod, Bourns inductors, and Oscons. However, considering the obvious limitations of the Danzz for stereo only, I could live with this 2.1 board. Maybe it's just the synergy with the speakers (which are not audiophile), but last night I hooked my Dual 1209 turntable to it and spun vinyl all night, which tells you something. Nice musical sounding amp. If there is a better design out there, I would be all over it. For now, it is an absolute steal at $20.

Maybe you can ask TI to do some real experiments with non functioning decoupling for tpa3116 to demonstrate why they say it should be as close as possible in every datasheet for almost every device. Add you don't believe them unless they show you real data, that will help 😀

Synch, master/slave is functioning on this version, or at least resistor/cap values are correct as in TI evm (not wrong values from datasheet). What is weird to me is YJ didn't fix ugly bootstrap (one behind inductors) when YJ copied these board too. Hiss was opamp or inputcap related I believe I remember from earlier posts.
Hi doctormord.
..
When compared to you, I am obviously a novice with badly designed systems.
cheers

Not saying your design is badly, just meant that the pcb/system/vendor design is bad/faulty/suboptimal.

Well, not seeing any goodwill here at all to be serious when talking about circuit/system design, im giving up here. Roll your caps and be happy with your uber super modded amps. Oh well.
(Actually, beside the proven faulty TI pop-on/off/delay implementation [where this only pops with open input at max gain], i actually have none of all this problems described here. No noise, no bad sound, no whatsoever.)
So everyone's happy here. 🙂

doc

On the contrary, if 3116ampboard has layout where you can fit a doctormord or IOS390 complete ampboard between tpachip and decoupling I say put 100nF close to tpachip befor adding PIO inputcaps or inputtransformers 🙂 When people ask for real examples why not remotely close to as close to chippin as possible wouldn't work or else they don't see need, well ask TI or read a little, web is full with data.
Thanks for you input Doctor J.
I have seen that board, and have come close to buying one several times. It looks exactly like the board in the Breeze amps.
The reviews thus far have kept me from pulling the trigger on a purchase.
Since the Manufacturers seem to keep the pulse of this DIY community, I hope that by posting here and bumping the subject occasionally that they will eventually take notice that there is a market for a better mousetrap.
I'd be happy to pay twice the price for the board you linked to get a well made product.

That board works out at £13.19 delivered to the UK - so I concur I would happily pay twice that for a 2.1 board with serviceable HP & LP filter implementation.
So you are basically telling someone else what to do ? If I am not mistaking you both have the same goal. OK, in the same way of thinking: why don't you combine forces and work together making the Wiener ?
BTW Wiener comes from Wien, the Austrian capital. I wouldn't know why letters are switched but I can guess who do this.
I am simply suggesting those who has the expertise to go for it. I proposed that way back when, yes. If I had the knowledge and skill, I would have done it already. One thing I learn in life is that if I want to get something done I have to do it yourself. Unfortunately, in this case, I do not have the skill nor knowledge. As I proposed before, I do not mind to provide limited financial support for the endeavour. Are you interested?

Don't mean to argue for the sake of arguing, But are you implying that TI designed the chip and yet purposedly placed the chip in a poorly designed board to showcase its utility? I am asking a genuine question here, splease do not get me wrong.

My 2.1 board arrived today. Hooked it up to some cheap test drivers to see what it's like. Well it's not at all right- the sub has a very loud hum- the stereo is completely dead. I tried it with 3 different power supplies so I don't think that's the problem. 🙁

Look for broken wires on caps due to flex from shipping. Bootstrap caps sometimes need replacement as they can get bent by inductors banging into them.
Hi irribeo,
what do you use to glue the heatsink back to the TPA 3116 after you have cut it smaller size??

My SMSL 36A-Pro is failing. The left channel keeps going out intermittently. I've reflowed the solder at the outputs twice now (at the board and the connectors), thought it was fixed, and then it quits again. I may have to give up on this one. I've put the ol' TP-22 (TK2050-based) in it's place for now. Grumpy.
Perhaps I should try another board in the chassis. Maybe the hiamplifier or IO390's tiny board...

My first 2.1 board was a Breeze Audio version and the stereo was completely dead too. I replaced the ps caps and it still didn't work. I got my money back. Like I said, this new board has hiss issues, so it is far from perfect.

Regards,
Above you were reacting to my post about redboard, which isn't produced by TI, it is a YJ board. TI board is EVM board.
If you ask me about TI 3116EVM and about on purpose designing not optimal, my answer would be yes, EVM is designed to showcase all possibilities.
To illustrate: here on diyaudio you can read threads designing for audio these or similar boards. Selecting parts that have 50-200pH less parasitic inductance for example is part of that process of optimising. On the web you can find that pcbtraces have 900-1500pH parasitic inductance per mm. So here on diyaudio redesigns are made for equivalent of 0.03mm to 0.22mm improvement. Now look at your redboard by YJ again, your blueblackboard by YJ your ac1308/audiobah or YJcopy, 0.03mm to 0.22 mm, distances are 100 to 1000 times larger on these boards than what they talk about being important in diyaudio threads.
