Funniest snake oil theories

Hmmmm ... as a nice touch on the Tron album - the majority is orchestral - they've left in the the assorted scrapings and bumpings of the instruments on the floor or rests, and the intakes of breath and other mouth sounds in the quiet inbetween bits - would have been easy to excise -- or maybe they didn't have very clear monitors ... :D

Sounds impressive on the outside of the house too - with, windows closed, ;).

Just moved onto the New Orleans movie soundtrack, with Armstrong and Billie Holiday, mid 40's, at the same volume - trumpet sound has got tons of blaattt, sounds good ... taken from 78's pre-recording disks ...

Dali does voice

If you wish a good subjective test of a system's vocal playback-
Buddy of mine played a recording of a fully mature , natural born castratto.
THAT is a freaking weird, otherworldly voice.
Horrific history of man-made castrattos, kind of a penultimate snake oil to say the ends justified the means , but that voice on my friends very good system was a pretty good indicator I've got a ways to go on my setup.
Just when I thought I was out... They dragged me back in!!

Yes, what man does for art ... there are some amazing sound worlds on albums, and often the most rewarding are those that sound least impressive on normal systems; what I have consistently found over the years is that no matter how good you think you've heard an album or track sound, that it is always possible for it to sound better - no limits ... ;) !

Can't recommend the soundtrack from Moulin Rouge highly enough for subjective assessment - this is a dynamics roller coaster, goes from "I think I can hear something ..." to the cones trying to mash themselves into a pulp - for people who reckon CD can't do this sort of thing ... :D

The "science" in audio is so sloppy anyway, mixing in some oil makes very little difference - if one actually looks a bit more closely at some of this supposed "serious" investigation the lack of rigour is pretty amazing - I gave up on taking them seriously quite some time ago ...

Reading the posts linked to in #5885 led me to a rather bad session with the special brew, so was incapable of any sane responses... I had penned a rather long reply regarding repeatability, the fact that mains noise is not constant etc. but then when I read this nugget:

Oscilloscope measurements revealed that these fuses are actually noise filtering/power conditioning devices in addition to protection devices. I speculate that the manufacturers of audio grade fuses do not describe them as power conditioning devices because:

1. They would have to describe the proprietary filtering mechanism in more detail than they care to.

2. Classifying the fuses as power conditioning devices would add another layer of regulatory approval (and more costs to the manufacturer).

Both the HiFi Tuning and Isoclean fuses have arrows on their cases which indicate that they should be oriented in the direction of current (energy) flow. Some people have scoffed and ridiculed the idea of "directional" AC fuses. Rather than something to ridicule, I saw the arrows as indications that there was something going on inside the "fuses" that required a specific orientation. Initially, my ears told me that the fuses sounded better in the direction of the arrows than against it. Noise spectrum measurements with an oscilloscope verified that the line noise was lower in the direction of the arrows than against it.QUOTE]

This and homage to Bybee quantum purifiers further down made me realise that it would be better to quaff strong lager and escape reality. I do think he wants to be an audiophile guru, leading the army of subjective audiophiles into battle with their sharpened Q-Tips, burning oscilloscopes and test gear, like an army of 21st Luddites.

Simple laddy , everything in audio changes the sound , yes fuses does too , as cables ,power cords , outlets , caps, bada bing , bada bang , those without ears cringe, but thats alright too, it's why they invented beer ...

:drink:

I've heard a tin foil cap reduces rf aggravation of the medulla oblongatta, enhancing the organs ability to process and enjoy audio stimuli.

If you believe this then I feel sorry for you...
Never mind cables I would love to hear the explanation how a rip off audiophile fuse can have any affect....never mind the directional claims.
I also wonder why sensitive equipment used in other fields such as medical etc don't have all these hang ups with fuses and cables? puzzling why it is only in audio that you get these far out beliefs:no:

My opinion about why people fall for snake oil is simply that they have never bothered to learn electronic theory/practice, aren't all that bright to begin with, yet want to somehow have some sort of control over their audio products and not feel left out of the chain.

Feeling like they can "improve" the sound all by themselves by simply purchasing the latest outlandish snake oil product makes their brain really believe that by placing a $5000 power cord/cable/fuse/magic bowl/Tice clock/photo of themselves in the freezer/green marker pen around the edge of a CD/wooden support for speaker cable/etc. in the chain, improves the sound and is well worth the money.

If they wish to do so and waste money on foolish products that is their right but when they try to defend their purchases/tweaks and can't show any objective proof that the sound was changed, but keep harping on and on how it was and that those that can't the difference must have defective hearing, then they need to shut up.
