Almost there!

I'm waiting on a place that is cutting 2 pieces of green marble for the bases.

Couldn't wait, so I hooked them up.

2 things jumped right up!

The imaging got huge. I was listening to my old speakers, then hooked the towers and ... bam! Everything expanded. I also get that "headphones" effect that was described about arrays.

The transients are crisp! Right after the imaging, that's the thing that I noticed. I can hear the pick hitting the guitar strings, the beater hitting the bass drum. Very nice!

So, will have to finish the bases, and when the arrays have been run in for a while, I'll start tweaking EQ.

But so far.... there's a big grin on my face!

Thanks. I still have things to do, and hours of listening, but I'm very happy my initial reaction was good. There is life in those towers.

Wesayso is waiting on a friend to cut his alu baffles. I'm sure he will pick it up again. My towers are nowhere near his in terms of involvement and shear beauty, but I am not as patient as him either, I think. :)

I'm sorry I haven't taken so many pictures. My working space is very limited, and I have to share. So, whenever I could, I had to bring all my stuff out, work on the arrays, then clean everything up and store away my tools before we needed the space. It was a race every time, so I forgot to take pictures...

I'll take better pictures later. If I find the time to stop the music and unhook them! :)

Had time to test a few things tonight.

It's still in run in phase, but...

Watching a Sci-Fi movie, the immersion is amazing!

It's a little much for a drama/intimate movie, as the presence of the arrays intimidate a bit there, but in an action of sci-fi movie, they are really at home and deliver the experience!

More test runs...

Sound is still settling in (been playing almost non-stop lately) and watched another movie.

I think arrays are amazing for movies! the stage it sets is just like sitting in a big commercial movie theater. I really get the sense of spaciousness and I like it!

I was hearing a little bit of "boxiness" from the arrays. I had them almost directly set on the back wall. I moved them about 12 inches off the wall and the boxy sound disappeared. So my arrays don't like being too close to the back wall.

Thanks!

It's funny because I was already thinking of a 9-driver center channel, then 4-driver back RL surrounds. The center I was thinking about is convex.... cool!
But I would like to add a couple of 6.5" drivers to my center as well... not just the 3" that I have on the arrays.

Trinaural? Hmmm... I had 6-channel stereo on my old receiver... would it sound the same?

seems just a short time ago it was tool talk now it's where to next ... ain't this fun!
i was just wondering what your final wiring scheme on the array turned out to be and if any thoughts on frequency or volume shading/tapering have developed yet.
or now that you have the arrays maybe a nice sub to accent the on screen explosions and laser blasts!

Wiring is a simple 4-4. No tapering.

I do have a sub that handles pretty much everything below 100-ish Hz. Will probably build a second one one day to balance both sides. :)

I know I have jumped from tools to almost finished product. Sorry about that. Time and space was limited, so I used every available second and didn't reserve time for pictures after each short session.

Been working the drivers for a while now, so I gave a shot at some EQing.

I tried, but these are no VIFAs, so they won't go much below 100Hz. Trying to boost anything too much between 60 and 120Hz rattles the drivers and distorts everything badly. Plus, they drop quite rapidly at around 15KHz, but since my ears are not that good anymore, I doubt I will notice. Next will be to integrate a sub (or subs) into the mix. Plus, I will adjust the EQ to my taste as well.

Here is a freq sweep I did, in green without EQ, red with my attempt at EQ. I also recorded (with the usual flaws that it could bring up) some songs I heard around and people like to listen while auditioning speakers.... plus some of my own! :) I'll put a link to SoundCloud as well.

Now with video! Short Line Array (line source) build

Now with video!

Arrays - YouTube

Use headphones!

Here's a quick test of my DIY arrays made with sixteen 3-inch drivers per array. The drivers came from Taiwan, on a factory sale at about $3 each. The sub was not turned on. Only the arrays.

I played back a mix of different songs from my MBP going out from AULab, a software that allows me to add effects (VSTs, like in this case some EQ) system wide on my MBP. Recording was done with a Blue Yeti mic, going into my little old PowerBook G4 and using Audacity.

I had to boost the gain a little this time around, as my neighbours were around and I didn't want to play at "reference" level! So, there is a bit of white noise on the recording.

Assembled in iMovie, no tweaking other than cutting out some video parts... even forgot to add transitions!

Here's a run down of the video:

1:38 testing with two makeshift boxes using a single driver each.
3:50 Folk song.
5:32 World.
6:45 My cat passing by!
7:22 Electronic.
8:27 Choir.
9:36 Classic Rock.
11:08 Grunge.
12:00 Cat again!

Thanks for watching/listening!

Nature sent an alarm call this morning.

Woke up to the feel of a 5.9 earthquake!

We're "kinda" used to earthquakes around here, but 5.9 still shakes ... Houses here are built to handle much stronger... but still...

Hmmm just I was jumping out of bed, I heard a "bam". I knew what that was. One of the arrays fell down. Not much to do trying to keep things up when it goes over 5.5.

Went downstairs, picked it up, started playing some music... no damage.

Relieved.

I'll probably make some bigger feet for the arrays though...
