Instead of small I meant to say stiff. Oops.I doubt you'd be able to hear a difference with those. Those panels are relatively small given their span and thickness and that type of reinforcement only improves rigidity in one direction.
Anyway, it could be that they added those pieces so as to fine-tune the internal volume.
If you knew the dimensions and MOE, you might be able to calculate it but it certainly is a lot easier to use an accelerometer.Good point about fine tuning the internal volume.
Slightly off topic, but if you knew that there was an audible panel resonance at 125Hz with this speaker which panels would you be looking at to find the culprit?

i always do that, glue all the leftover pieces of wood on the inside of speaker panels...I am not sure if it helps theoretically or practicaly, but I do it anyway. What else can you do with odd cuts of wood? You can burn it, throw it away, or use it to make the box heavier and less resonant.

I would go further. Your cabinet can't be too stiff. Here is what I did. Notice the last shelf brace is itself braced against the end panels. Don't use mdf for bracing. 1" ply is much stiffer after cut-outs.Hi,
Looking at the attached photo of the Sony SS-AR2, you'll notice that there are wood braces at the top and bottom of the cabinet.
Are these braces useful, either theoretically or in practice?

A further thought; these Sony speakers are $25,000.
Knowing the attention to detail that went into the design and manufacture of these speakers, and the extensive bracing inside, surely the designers would have to have a compelling reason to include the top and bottom braces? And wouldn't they have oriented them the way Planet 10 suggested?
