This is from Linkwitzlab "Black-List"

Analogue Alchemy - SOUND MASTER speakers

Plus you only need eight mono-block amplifiers to run the basic set - or 12 amplifiers if you want to power some sub-woofers. That should make for a wonderful system. Unfortunately they would take up to much room in my dog house - which is where I would be living if I spent the $$$$ on 'em.

The impression they told me that they had from Linkwitz, was that with their electronics and visual/ mechanical treatment it was not an Orion and therefore not an issue. As to whether this dialogue actually occurred or the exact form it took if it did, I have no idea of course. I merely mention it as part of a chat the Guitarist and I had with these guys. Naturally the very first thing I did was ask them about the relationship between their speaker and the Orion. In practice the bass hit the endstops pretty quickly with a live CD the Guitarist had brought along, and below what I would consider reasonable listening levels. The mid and top were very good though. First time I'd heard an (almost) Orion, so I was quite interested. It's perfectly possible that the limited bass output was an artifact of their electronics, so this shouldn't be construed as a criticism of an actual Orion.

Just nipped over to Linkwitz's site and noted point 4 of the terms and conditions:

'Should you start promoting or selling products that alter or deviate from the ORION or PLUTO designs to express your own design preferences and trade-offs, but are clearly recognizable as ORION/PLUTO inspired or derived products, then you should inform me of your intentions and publicly state that "www.LinkwitzLab.com is not affiliated with (your company name here)". Otherwise I will place your name on my Blacklist'.

So, they may well have informed him, as they said, which would satisfy the first requirement. I didn't notice a disclaimer being displayed, but they were quick to do this verbally when the issue was raised. Not that I'm defending these guys, but if they have contacted Linkwitz they seem to just need to make sure they publicly state lack of affiliation to trade within requirements. It is essentially a copy of course. Their turntable was basically a Clearaudio copy too, at least in terms of appearance if not underlying engineering.

Interesting. When I spoke to these guys at the recent UK National Hi-fi Show, where they were demoing the speaker, they claimed they had been in touch with Linkwitz and had some sort of dialogue with him.

Which is quite correct. There was an exchange of several emails (which I've seen), a couple of phone conversation and the Analogue Alchemy did follow to the letter on all requirements/wishes that SL asked for at the time (March 2010). My guess is that they will do the same with his new requirements. I think it was a matter of some misunderstanding and will be cleared soon to a mutual satisfaction of both parties.

Cheers

Alex

WOW what a rip, do these people have no shame, I wouldn't be able to sleep at night.

I would rather call it a very good advert for the Orion. Making of these speakers was agreed with SL beforehand and they are quite different from the Orion in many ways (and, obviously, the same in many ways too). "Blacklisting" was just a mistake - thought a rather useful one for all parties involved, as the (apparently) remaining issues were cleared - the blacklist is now empty ;) .

Cheers

Alex

..and now back to our regularly scheduled Ultimate OB Gallery. :)

I thought this youtube was interesting highlighting a basic fullrange OB vs a swan's type rear horn.

Open Baffle Speakers vs Back Loaded Horn - YouTube

..it is however difficult to appreciate the real differences between the two designs because they aren't level-matched. Still, it is interesting, well recorded (..video camera), and using a rather nice simple cello piece. :)

No, with a good headphone : easy ! Perhaps with a good loudspeaker.

The horn is far better, the cello is more realistic. The OB misses bass, and the cello sounds like a violin.

It is playing cello suite of Bach.
