EnABL - Listening impressions & techniques

Their sound isn't dull so much as it is even handed, without any particular added emphasis to color, space or transients. Adding EnABL V2.0 does provide more color and an astonishing amount of downward dynamic information. Even the little EnABL'd 7's will do justice to a full orchestra, at full charge. And, due to their extended xmax, they will even begin to provide that sensation of "weight" from said orchestra, when in Fonken Prime cabinets.

I cannot claim I prefer them to EnABL V 2.0 Fostex 127, drivers as I do like the dynamic color those drivers and Lowther's provide. For accuracy, information and artistic musical emphasis, the EnABL'd Alpair 7's from Mark Audio / Planet 10 do overwhelm the pair of 127's I listen to on a regular basis.

Since the 127's have been discontinued I would recommend the stock Mark Audio drivers over anything but EnABL'd Fostex F200A's, Audio Nirvana alnico drivers and especially the fantastic 15" and Enabl'd Lowther PM6A 16 ohm silver VC drivers. The EnABL'd Mark Audio drivers I have heard are easily competitive with the EnABL'd versions of those three drivers and types.

Untreated Jordans do not compare favorably to any of the metal coned Mark Audio drivers. EnABL'd versions of both are much closer, until you get to information content and coherent details. There, the only comparable driver I know of is the EnABL'd F200A.

Hey Bud, to which AN 15 incher are you refering to ?( they have three versions or are you refering to the alinco only)

Audio Nirvana Super 15 is the only one I have any experience with. The whizzer is THE BEST implementation of a whizzer I have encountered. It is a smooth horn attached to the voice coil, rather than the more abrupt whizzers in lesser AN models and everywhere else.

The pair I treated did not require any gloss coat with EnABL V2.0 patterns and only a small amount of acrylic glue on the cone and whizzer backside at the outer portions of each. Really sensational sound, light, tight, powerful, musical, transparent, BIG, delicate etc.....

I'm really interested in seeing the support for all of these perceptions based on hearing that are no doubt so acute.

Anyone?

Dave

Well, no data but personal 'perceptions' (n of 1!) - these from my fairly unique 8" mids. I do get the effects Bud talks about in that the 'sweet spot' now is very much larger than before the EnABL mods and that sound quality seems to radiate out of the room - around the house. To my EAR, a dispersion curve might not be profoundly different than before. Because of the way we hear, I suspect the shape and smoothness of the curve is at least as important as the linearity. Again, a matter of removing that which is objectionable - a microphone doesn't hear, it only transduces...

FYI: Aquaplas - resonance treatment from yesteryear

Some of you may recall that I was reluctant to add acrylic to the cones of my JBL LE8T-H drivers when I EnABLed them last winter. I didn't know what the existing white surface coating was on the cones but was afraid they would absorb too much acrylic. Recently I ran across some information on that coating in the Lansing legacy board. The coating was called Aquaplas, and was a mix of resin, pigment and apparently clay. It was used on woofers, mids, and even compression diaphragms to dampen resonances. Woofer cones were often treated on the rear surface, while mids and compression diaphragms were treated on the outer surface. Mass was apparently fairly negligible, though woofers received heavier coatings that could flake-off. Recent attempts to re-create the coating were not conclusive. Here is the link: AQUAPLAS

I remain totally enamored of these, BTW... 😀

holez

Hi,

I haven't looked at this thread for some years now and I can't see myself reading all of it to find the word "holes".

I have a question, though, brought about by a need in one of my speaker boxes. When talking about baffle (diffraction or what not) treatments, has anyone experimented with a pattern of holes instead of bumps, i.e. intaglio instead of embossed? Around a driver, say.

Thanks,

Jacques

Just as it is with Enabl, the dimensions will be far too small to affect the frequencies associated with the baffle edge diffraction. Applied as you suggest, it can only make the response worse. That is not an effective method to address diffraction.

This should be in its own thread, since it goes to the objective.

back from the dead

Since this was the only place I found EnABL and the Pioneer NSBs together, I thought I would revive it. I'm curious if anyone ever developed a definitive pattern for these el-cheapo gems. I don't really trust my ability to perform the "tap test" to create my own. I also read a recommendation from Dave at Planet 10 to look into Mark McKenzie's suggested mods for these drivers. I failed to find any reference to Mark's mods and wonder if anyone has them cached?

Ok....Bud In need of your help

Been Reading for days about your Enable process... I am ready to have a look at the patterns for my Ohm Walsh F drivers could you please post them for all of us to see

Any help/information on mods to the drivers will be welcome too

Thank you sir you inspired me
