Well finished up the Vent board.......
Looks good overall. FWIW, damping all that extra baffle area/recess to lower reflections is a good plan: http://www.lansingheritage.org/images/altec/specs/home-systems/878a-santiago/page2.jpg
Ditto wrapping any new bracing.

Thanks!.. Where abouts are u talking? could u post a pic with arrows where u mean?
thanks
Man these speakers rock! I was just listening to aretha franklin a deeper love and u would swear she is right in the room , and the bass holy crap it is so tight and hits so hard and deep!...The beyma one definatley responded to the bracing and smaller port too, but i still have the bass turned up a little more on the EQ than the 416-8A one, I can only imagine what it will sound like with two of them! 😀

I just found this thread. Here are my A7 with 1505 horns. The woof is the 515 and each horn has two 288C. In between the horns and the bass cabs there is a Beyma CP25 super tweeter. I tri amped with a Rane active crossover.
I no longer have these, but I did love them. There was no need for surround sound when watching a movie with those big horns.

Wow, can't believe you got rid of them. The A5/1505 is my favorite speaker. I "make do" with my A5/1005. 🙂
I had the 1005s for a while. The 1505 is much more open and much larger sound. In hind site, I wish I never got rid of them. I ended up with a pair of Edgarhorns that, to me, did not sound as good.
I crossed the mids at 700hz and 7000hz. The woof was driven by a Crown D150, the mids by a John Hogan 300B, and the tweet by the Sonic Impact. It was a fine sounding system.....should have kept it.
Love those big multi cells djn!
I use a pair of tar filled 1003's and RWB 288's for the mid-range on my DIY's. I'd love to try pair of 1505!

They have a MUCH bigger sound than the 1003 or 1005. While watching movies, I could hear stuff going on behind me. No kidding.

Sounds like some weird phase in the recording. I've heard that before, but I can't remember the recording.
1505's have more vertical dispersion, but the same horizontal, so I guess that accounts for more spacious sound for audio playback. For movies I believe the goal is have a very dead room and rely on the other channels to provide the ambiance, so the extra dispersion is unwanted, depending on your seating layout.
The other benefit of the 1505's is that the larger collective mouth allows for better pattern control down low.
1003's do have the advantage of a lower cutt-off. I run mine down to 300hz, so you get more of the vocal range on a single horn. However they still don't have the controlled directivity of the 1505 when playing that low.
Anyway that's just the theory (from reading GM's posts), and I hope I didn't butcher it. I'd love to get my grubby hands on a pair to see for myself, but I can't see myself paying the ebay $'s. Maybe I'll get lucky on craig's list like I did with those 1003's. 😀
One thing is for sure, they look so freaking cool. 🙂
50% bigger!They have a MUCH bigger sound than the 1003 or 1005.
The 1505s are really magic. They just sound so big and true to life - like real, life size musicians. I don't hear that with many speakers. And they do the holographic thing very well.
FWIW, I did not find that I could run the 288 drivers down to 300Hz on my 803s. Maybe with the 290s (phenolic) it would be possible. I did try it and it seemed OK. I find the 500Hz horns flatter and better than the 300Hz horns in my limited multi-cell experience.

I can't beleive you sold them either.I would have never sold the 1505's I'm still hunting a pair.🙁

A friend of mine bought the big Edgarhorn set up and I just thought that sounded better than the Altec rig. I sold off all the Altec and built up the Edgarhorns. After I had the Edgarhorns for a while, I regretted selling the Altec. Oh well.
Altec 1505B frequency answer
Hi everybody,
I am actually doing measurements with my 1505B and 291-16B using HOLM Impulse and I would like to check if someone on this forum already got some data to share, for comparison... My drivers are equipped with brand new diaphragm from Great Plane Audio.
Regards,
Dominique
